I have a JD 4310 whose rear PTO won't spin. When I activate the switch, the PTO indicator light on the dash illuminates, but the shaft doesn't spin. I can mannually turn the shaft slightly less than 1/4 turn in either direction until it stops. Any idea what the problem may be or thoughts on further trouble shooting? Tom

Just an idea here. It's an electric PTO clutch. Maybe there's a wiring problem to the clutch itself (torn or disconnected wire or bad fuse). ....

I looked up info in the manual. It could be electrical or mechanical. Here's some electrical troubleshooting info from the manual (you need an ohmmeter)

Park machine safely in neutral with parking brake on first.

1. Check Rear PTO Switch
-Open the right side control panel to access rear PTO switch
-Disconnect rear PTO switch from wiring harness
-Use ohmmeter or continuity tester to test switch continuity in on and off positions
With switch OFF there should be continuity between terminals A&C, D&F, G&H, and nowhere else.
With switch ON there should be continuity between A&B, D&E and nowhere else.

2. Check rear PTO solenoid
-Access the solenoids on the right side of machine under floorboard. They look like two round solenoids wired into one connector.
-Disconnect the solenoid connector from wiring harness. As you look at the end of the connector there are four pins, call them A,B,C and D from left to right with notched end of connector on top.
-Use ohmmeter to measure resistance between terminals A&B (rear PTO solenoid). It should be between 10.5-11.5 ohms. C&D should also be the same measurement (that's the MFWD solenoid).
-Check for grounds or shorts by testing between each pin and the bare metal of the solenoid case.

If those tests don't pan out the news sounds bad. The PTO mechanical trouble shooting table for "Rear PTO Will Not Engage" gives four reasons for rear PTO not engaging, none of them good. PTO clutch damaged or worn, Cogs on gear shift or shift collar damaged or worn, Gears and/or bearings worn, or oil pressure not sufficient to PTO clutch.

Can you provide me a schematic of the terminal configuration? I pulled the PTO switch and tried checking the continuity as mentioned above, but wasn't sure I had the correct terminal selected for each test. The only terminals marked on my switch are the A, B, and C. I didn't see any other designations on the switch for terminals D-H. My initial assessment (assuming I had the correct terminal selected for each test) is that the switch is bad. I would like to confirm I had the correct terminals just to be certain.

I've determined the solenoids are OK. Both showed 11.5 on the volt ohm meter. Everyone I talk to, including my local JD dealer, seems to think it is something other than a mechanical problem. I'm going to drop if off at the dealer tonight. I'll keep you posted.

I got my tractor back. The problem was hydraulic fluid getting to the PTO clutch. There is a sleeve that the PTO shaft rotates in that slipped enough so the fluid could not flow thru the ports. The mechanic commented that he had never seen such a thing and it took him awhle to find it. You were right, the fix was pricey.

Sorry to hear about that, and thanks for posting back. With the rear pto access panel it doesn't seem like it would be terribly hard to fix if one knows where to look. Hopefully someone else will benefit from your expensive experience. ....

Well that is good, I am glad you were able to get it fixed. Can I ask you a couple of questions? What were you doing when it stopped? Do you know what parts where replaced? And if you do not mind, can you give me a figure that your dealer charged you. I have ordered the manuals, and waiting for them to come in before I tear mine apart.

Im a new member today June 26 I'm having the exact same problem Just Brush Hogging along and it stopped no noise at all just stopped Light on dash on but not turning I'm dying to find what the dealer said about yours. Please advise I really cant afford that right now ....

Well, I will report back. Mine did the exact same thing the others did with the same problem. I found that my sleeve had twisted in the bushing as well. I have some pictures posted in another forum at the link below. Here is how I diagnosed and fixed the problem. Only cost me about $100 I think to fix it and that was because I changed the Hydro Fluid and filter. Basically I bought a gauge and hooked it to the diagnose port on the hydraulic block underneath the tractor. This proved no flow/electrical problem. I then drained the case, removed the fluid tube, popped the back cover off, and pulled the PTO shaft and bushing plate. Then I pressed the bushing out, and pressed it back in at the correct orientation. I put it back together, and the PTO was turning again. and BTW, you do not have to remove the Rock shaft control cylinder to this. Total to remove was I think 12 bolts for the back place, 4 for the bushing plate, and one tube. ....
