A set of chains will have a similar effect, cost less, go on/off easier, and store easier. Also consider getting liquid into your rears.

You might be interested in this oddity. (Or you might not.) My local Chinese tractor importer quotes ag tires on all units. Turfs cost an extra $700. ....

If you have your tractor manual you may wish to look at the size tires it would have. It should have them for ag tires. If it is 4 wheel drive you need to be careful to be sure you match the sizes. ....

Further to KT's post, yes, escept that you can mis-match the circumferances of F & R if you never engage the 4WD except on slippery surfaces. ....

It my understanding unless you have all four wheels the same diameter there is not a true match speed between front and rear wheels at to ground speed. Or to do would would be next to impossible in gearing so tractors are design for the front wheels to be at a little higher ground speed than the rear wheels so they are always pulling and not being pushed at anytime and rather than helping become a hinderance.

Ever wondered why the front wheels wear so much faster on 4 wheel drive, even when used only on slippery surface. ....

Kenny the reasons front tires wear quicker: they steer, have caster and considerable toe-in which isn't good for any tire. The back tires are just along for the ride so to speak. ....

Jeff, while I agree with the conditions, caster, toe-in, etc., I think the wear is more caused by the 60% rear, 40% front weight distribution and the fact that the front tires turn 1% - 5% faster than the backs.

In effect the front tires (while the machine is in 4WD) are in a constant state of slippage.

Best of luck. ....

You also have up to six times the circumference on the rear. For every time a square inch of the rear tire contacts the ground, a square inch of the front tire will have to contact the ground 3 to 6 times. The fronts should last only a third of the life of the rears ... with all other factors the same. ....

Radarfish, welcome to the board!!

While your point is a good one, your numbers, in this case, are more than a little off.

A 'Bota L2250 has 6x14 fronts and 9.5x24 rears. According to my tire data book, the rolling circumference of a 6x14 is 75" and a 9.5x24 is 124".

So for every revolution of the rear tires, the front tires do ~1.65 revolutions.

Best of luck. ....

I have only seen one instance where it was 6 to one. But while I did not know the exact specs for this particular tractor, I am surprised that is all the difference there is ... not even two to one. Thanks for the correction, however the example is still valid. Randy ....

Murf
I really do need to qualify my explanation. The 6 to 1 difference in tire size was not a production tractor. A friend refitted the rears with swather tires and left the front garden tractor tires the same. Also it was not 4x4. Additionally, I stated a square inch to square inch comparison which would not be valid unless the tread width was identical. Sorry about the confusion. ....

Radarfish let me also welcome you here.

Hey PJ, do you have a front wheel drive machine there, Where the rear wheels are only along for the ride? :) If you will ask a farmer who has a two wheel drive tractor how long his front wheels last compared to the rear wheels as to wear you will find they last every bit as long. So steering, caster and chamber can not be causing the wear by themselves that is seen on a 4 wheel drive unit. Even on a two wheel rear drive vechicle the front and rear wear about same speed. Now when you put the drive job on them the front wear much faster than the rear.
