After owning two Outbacks with virtually zero problems, the wife decided to purchase a sedan this time. They hold their value extremely well and are priced like everyone else's two wheel drive.

Looks great! We're looking for an Impreza outback right now, putting in for quotes online tonight and will test drive in the next week or so. If the wife likes it we'll buy. The only things that concern me about it are that the 205/50x17 tires will probably be hard to replace with something beefy and the the seats look sort of mediocre. We drive at least 10 miles/day on gravel and it takes it's toll on tires. ....

Low profile tires like that reduce the sidewall flex for ride comfort on bumpy roads. they also decrease traction in slippery conditions as the profile gets lower. ....

Subaru seems to have confused the Outback model with the WRX in their product planning. The Outback model has a raised suspension for additional ground clearance, why would they put low profile tires on it?

If the Impreza doesn't pan out we'll check out the Legacy. It looks really nice but we didn't want to spend the extra money. ....

There is an Outback model Impreza but try to find one. That is what I really wanted for the wife other than the wagon but she really likes the sports car look. The leather seats in this car are by far the best we have had to date in a Subaru.

As far as the tires are concerned, the only bad part about them is the additional cost for replacement.

This one I paid invoice for, the last one was 250 under and both times I was allowed more than "clean" book for our Outback. They hold their value! Rebates are decent now as well.

Good luck with your dealing!

Thanks. If Impreza Outbacks are hard to find we're not in a big hurry (we've decided to wait until our taxes are done anyway). In the mean time a test drive is in order.

Cutter, if you don't mind me asking what model Legacy did you get? 4 cyl, 6 cyl, turbo, manual or auto transmission? How is the performance? ....

As best I know, the only engine available is the 4 cyl. in that model. The Impreza we saw on the floor is the turbo model, just came in and was already sold. Very fancy, list price was around 36k.

Ours have all been automatic and the performance is great, makes you think it is a six most of the time. She was ticking off 29 mpg with the wagon so we shall see how this one does.

There was a young couple in the store when we tried ours that had gone to drive a Honda and a Toyota (sedans) and came back and purchased the Impreza. Said there was no comparison for the money. I agree.

My wife's is basically a standard edition other then the spoiler as it even has cloth seats, as she doesn't like leather! (or chains) The 07 is so much better then the 04 edition. We have picked up over five mpg just breaking it in, this car unlike the old one barely needs a passing gear with the extra fifteen horsepower. ....

Hi Ken,

Are you still in the car market? Never thought I'd say it but hybrids are looking a little bit better ;) ....

I had to fill up the 'car' this morning, 80 liters (21 US gal.) at $1.35 / liter (US$5.10 / gallon) for premium, that will take me about 375 miles, or nearly 18 mpg.

After paying for the fill-up the little lady commented about how I should get something a little easier on fuel.

Pulling back onto the highway a car ran up the back of us pretty quickly, even though the speed limit is 50mph, 60-65 is the usual speed, a little pressure on the gas pedal made the image in the rear-view get very small, very fast.

I don't care how old I get, I doubt the novelty of 0-60 in a little over 6 seconds will wear off.... ;)

Best of luck. ....

Yep. My wife was laid off at Intel, and we got nailed big time on taxes, so we put the new car on hold for a bit. But it looks like she may land a new job today so we'll be back in the market. Got to get the Highlander fixed up and sold first. I'd like to see if we can rent an Impreza for a week or so to see if she likes it. If not we'll look at the Legacy.

I have a philosophical aversion to hybrids so wouldn't buy one of those. A small diesel, however, isn't out of the question. ....

We finally took a test drive in an 08 Impreza Outback. It sure feels like very high quality and quite substantial for a small car. The wife really liked it so we'll probably close the deal next weekend. The only complaints I had were that the low profile tires really don't fit the "outback" image and the auto transmission is only a 4-speed (but it's manual mode is pretty cool)

The Toyota dealer loaned us a new Corolla while the Highlander is being repaired. It's not a bad small car but compared to the Impreza it feels quite a bit cheaper. Less features, more noise, doesn't handle as well, a lot cheaper interior. It's not a direct comparison since it's $5k cheaper and not AWD but the Impreza didn't have any of the cheap feel to it. ....
