I bought a 4 CYL. 40 HP Foton tractor w/ loader about 3 months ago and couldnt be more happy with it. I have also been using my own bio-diesel that I make from waste vegitable oil and the tractor runs just fine on it with no loss of power; and it smells like chicken. I would like to know if there are any other 40hp Foton owners who have found a cross referance PN# to FRAM OR WIX or any major brand filter for the oil and fuel filters on the tractor.
Thanks for your help

Hoyt, sorry I don't have the filter specs you need. I am actually looking at the Foton 404. Very interested. How much did you have to pay (if ya don't mind sharing) and where did you purchase it? Completely satisfied?

Thanks ....

The 404's Are beeing sold through Rural King,I bought mine for a base price of $7999.99...I believe the 25 through 35 HP tractors that Northern Hydraulics sell are Fotons, although some say Jimmas..They are the spitting image of mine.As far as the filters go..I just changed my fluids with filters from Rual King, they didn`t even know what to charge me for them??I am trying how to change to domestic filters, but haven`t figured how to deciper chinese yet.Going to see if I can find either WIX or a BALDWIN web site and ship them a email..I`ll keep you posted...Sid ....

The oil filter needs to be removed and replaced with a common oil filter thread. Remove the stub from the housing and have it machined to use a 3/4 inch stub. Otherwise you need to buy from the dealers for $15 plus shipping. Caution if you try to match up thread and dimesions all you will find are hydraulic oil filters and they cost about $35.00 each.
Convert to 3/4 inch screw on filter and save a lot of money and confusion. I use a wix 51515. ....

I am ready to order a Foton 354 from www.jdbequipment.ca
up here in Canada. What other parts sources are there?

Is there a newsgroup or a FAQ with details on oils, filters, etc to use with the Foton tractors? Any website with information on hints and kinks....

It looks like a very nice and well made tractor!

Thanks for any info.

I have a 40hp rural king and like most, oil filters are either not in stock or mighty salty at the chk out.I found a Fram that works for around 8 bucks .
It is a Fram P1654A Hydraulic filter. It is a tad bit larger capacity however, it works fine.

Wait - you're using a hydraulic filter for engine oil? Or am I just reading this wrong?

First, it's your tractor. But I'd never use a hydraulic filter for engine oil. If there's a bypass valve at all, it's definitely going to have the relief wrong pressure. Oil pressure is <100 psi, hydraulic pressure is >2000 psi. Second, I personally change my tractor engine oil filters every 50 hours. I'd suspect there's wishful thinking behind believing everything's "fine" on yours, considering 200 hours on a hydraulic filter?

Just to confirm, yours is a spin on engine oil filter - right? Not a paper filter that goes in a canister?

Not 1 filter the oil has been changed every 50 hrs. I checked with every mech I know and every farmer I know and all said it would work. And it has worked very well. ....

I once asked Fram if I could use their race-car oil filter for my tractor hydraulics (all the dimensions were identical) and they answered, "NO."

There's a site called, as I remember, "Chinese Tractor Owners Association" that looks good. I think you pay a small fee to join. ....

I am using a hydraulic filter on the engine. Every one I have talked to says a hydraulic filter can be used on an engine but a engine filter can't be used on hydraulics.
I don't know, the hydraulic filters have worked fine for me with no problems.
Another person has told me carquest has a filter for the engine part #85086 for around 14 bucks but I haven't tried it yet. ....

My tractors might be exceptions but their hydraulic filters are much bigger and costlier than their oil ones, so I wouldn't switch even if it was OK. ....

I suspected as much. A Fram P1654A is a 33-35 micron filter with no bypass valve. Don't believe it has an anti-drain back valve either. If that filter gets clogged for any reason whatsoever, it will will definitely impede - or even stop oil flow through your engine. Not good on the oil pump either.

Again, your tractor - your money. But - despite what the "farmers and mechs in the area" say - a proper engine oil filter will have both a bypass valve and an anti-drain back valve. Filters smaller stuff out too, typically down around the 20 micron level or so.

Didn't know about valves and drainback, which I've not seen mentioned on the filter or its box. The 35 microns is OK for hyd filters (don't know about oil), but I doubt a hyd one is designed for engine-oil tempss. And, as mentioned, hyd pressures are vastly higher (but I don't know if the filter gets subjected to those numbers).

On my Yanmar at least, any bigger oil filter wouldn't fit. So I'll stick to oil filters for oil and hyd for hyd. ....

If this helps those deciding what tractor make to buy, I can honestly say that my Foton (Noriker) 704 is a great tractor. It is used hard in forestry applications and has now 800 hours or so with no major issues. A all-around great machine at a fraction of the price... do get the Perkins engine if there's a choice offered. I payed $26,500 for mine in 2005 (cabin, full 4WD). Hard to beat ....
