One of my wild ambitions has allways been to make a steam whisle. I've been able to find unending designs for a steam engine, boiler design, etc., but not a shred on whisle design. Does anyone have a clue where I might find some info? Thanks in advance. Frank.

Frank, I might be able to help.

First though, I need to know if you actually want a 'whistle' or a steam 'bell', they are very different creatures, a whistle makes a shrill noise, a bell makes a lower bellow kind of sound, sort of like a fog horn but higher pitched.

Best of luck. ....

Ain't it sad? I am getting too old to hear the dinner bell too. Never thought about a steam whistle. :} ....

After my medical problems the little lady wanted me to put some sort of 'signalling device' on the shop, in case I couldn't get her on the radio or something.

I put an old double trumpet air horn set off a transport truck under the porch over the front door. It runs off the air compressor pliumbing.

It can be heard for miles, many, many miles I'm told.

Best of luck. ....

Murf; Now you're making my life too complicated. I never knew there was a steam bell also. It's the sound of the old shrill whisle I'm after. As a kid the train went thru the farm we lived on, on a cold still winter morning you could hear that old whisle for miles before it got to us. This summer we attended a county fair where a fellow had about five or six whisles on a pole with an induatrial compressor beside it. He could sorta play a tune with them and allways attracted a crowd of every age from little kids to old goofers like me. I'm sure one could be bought on e-bay or somewhere, but I just want the challenge of trying to make one. If you know of a website or perhaps a book I could buy, that would be neat. The Mrs. says I'll get arrested for being a public nuscance, and "She aint a gonna bail me out." So before giving me any direction on the design maybe you ought to see if enough Tractor point members would pass the hat to get me out of the stony lonesome. Frank. ....

Ok now I know what you're aiming for Frank.

Given your background I can give you a design that will probably work better in wood than steel, but the design is for sound, not necesarily realistic appearance. Hardwoods work better than soft for some reason. The scale is what's imnportant, you can enlarge or reduce it to whatever size you desire. Send me an note and I'll fire it right off to you.

I'll keep looking, somewhere I've got the design for a steam ship's whistle, almost the same thing.

Best of luck. ....

murf; wood, brass, steel, it don't matter, just the sound is my goal. You said send me a note, I really don't know what you mean or how to get a note to you? Please let me know, I'll be glad to pay you for any research expense you generate gathering the info. thanks in advance. Frank. ....

Frank, I can't send you a message, you have that feature blocked in your profile.

Just click on "Murf" to the left of the screen, then at the bottom of my profile click on the blue "Send a Private Message to Murf" and give me an email address.

I have a plans for making one out of wood, designed as a 'stick it in your mouth and blow' whistle for kids, but easily adapted, or I can give you pictures and a description of how to do it in metal, including the mathematic formulae for caclution of the tone, the real McCoy, sort of.

Best of luck. ....
