I made my garage of insulated concrete forms (ICF). I have a basement room as a safe location for tornados.
I was wondering if it would be a good idea to build small ICF out buildings for people as shelters. As the are a lot of money I was also wondering if you could combine functions.
1) Could you also make it into a cool room for hanging your deer? yes/no
2) If yes do you think a small air conditioner would keep it cool enough? You will have R50 or more on the walls and ceiling.
3) In the south our tornado season is in the late fall and early spring. Would you climb in with hanging meat to save your life?

Peters: Do you mean above ground or underground for your proposed shelters? With above ground insulation of R50 my guess is if it were protected form direct sun and not very big that a small air conditioner would keep it cool enough to cool out deer but maybe not cool enough for too long of term storage. I don't know if moisture would be a problem or not, perhaps a bit of ventalation would keep that in check. We used to have storm cellars that served to keep vegatables long into the winter and shelter from storms. They had stone walls, a dirt floor a wooden roof just above ground level with straw on top for the winter. Not an expert by any means, but just my guess. Frank. ....

Frank I was thinking a small building above ground. Lacing the reinforcing bar across the ceiling and pouring as a monolithic structure. I bit like a WW II pill box. I would thing 5000 BTU would keep it cool. They use these materials for cold storage building with the walls being white.
I could be below ground but thought it would be more useful above round. They have tested the walls for 150 mph debree so it should be sufficient.
Like you said I am a bit worried about condensation and freezing of the air conditioner. ....
