Ibrown59, Yup, I have a Venco 6Ton Hoist Mounted on My 2002 Silverado 3/4 HD. Works very well. Has hydraulic up and down. The downside is the lowered rear bumper and the rear hitch. Also when dumping a lot of material stays up behind the wheelwells, and I have to use a hoe to pull it down. Another problem is that I have to raise the bed to gas up. But other than that I love it.

I have to think that with all the work and cost to buy and install it you could buy a new or used dump trailer that could haul 3 times the volume and 4-8 times the weight capacity.

Years ago a friend of a friend (my friends are smarter than his) took a Chevy 1/2 ton, bought a kit from Northern Hydraulics (now Northern Tool), installed it, loaded it with gravel, raised the bed and watched in horror as the frame rails folded over from the back to up under the cab. Truck was totalled. But I'm jis' sayin'. ....

Here is the way I did the math:

My truck is rated to haul 1700# in the bed. Don't know for sure but I would guess that the dump hardware has got to weigh 200#. So we are down to a 1500 pound net.... maybe.

My compact dump trailer weighs 2000# empty and has a 7000# GVW and that (7000#) is what the truck will haul on a ball hitch.

So, I get 1500# in the bed or 5000# on a ball hitch.

'Nuff said. ....

I agree, would rather tow it when needed and you can haul lots more. My F250 hauls a 10,000 lb. capacity dump trailer. I have 3 different size trailers to choose from for the desired load application. ....

DR

You are right,
You take the GVWR, subtract the Curb Weight, subtract all Accessories, subtract cargo, subtract Passengers and Beer, subtract add-ons and what is left is the Payload Capacity.
So if your Truck has a 12000 GVWR and the Curb Weight is 7200 (dualie), that would leave 4800 lbs, now subtract the Fuel, the driver, the passenger, the gear, the case of Beer, the chain saw, the chains, the tow hitch, the dump body etc etc and you will find that the guy who buys the Dump Body that is a 2 to 3 yarder and then builds up the sides and fills it with WET DIRT or Rocks, has well exceeded his capacities and they yell when their warranties are voided. Your WEAKESS LINK is what the load is based on. It may be the Axle bearings, the tires, the brakes, the springs or whatever. Many people JUST FILL IT and never give any thought. Well..... when they head down that 15 percent grade that goes on for 9 miles (I-25 West of Chattanogga or I-76 going into Mount Airy or West of Ashville on I-40 or coming down the backside of Rocky Top etc) and they can't seem to stop to make that terrible turn.. well... imaginations can kick in here.
Know your limits and stay within them or you may get your WINGS and become part of the AIRWING early. ....

My issue is not about load capacity or volume. It is one of convenience accessibility and maneuverability .
I have a fairly large pile of dirt that needs moved from up on a hill down into the front yard to fill in a ditch.
Neither the loading or dumping points are readly accessible.
It would be difficult enough to maneuver a pickup in either spot so using a pickup with an attached trailer is a no go.
Another thing is I need 1000 or 2000 pounds of slag which don't make much sense to hitch up a large capacity trailer for that when a pickup could haul that easily and is already to go. ....

Two problems with using the fel for this.
1* To many time consuming trips with the tractor along a somewhat treacherous path up and down the hill. I could load the pick up and haul it down to the front yard but I'm not overly thrilled with the idea of shoveling 5 or 6 loads of dirt off of the truck.

2*The slag plant is about a 15 mile round trip from here. I don't relish the notion of making 4 trips with the tractor on a busy highway to pick up a ton of slag. ....

What do they use at the slag pit to load? If it's anything other than a smallish bobcat and your locale is anything like where I'm from a.) they won't load due to damaging the truck (contrary to GM's Like a Rock commercial with gravel spewing all over the sides and tailgate as the loader dumps the load), b.) Liability reasons for damage to the truck due to overloading, c.) Insurance regulations that would state no one is allowed out of the truck while being loaded. d.) Insurance regulations preventing any non-commercial (read: commercial customer who carries liability insurance) customer from being in the yard.

I have 2M in commercial liability coverage. And my local limestone pit stopped loading even my 5yd (12,500GVW) dump trailer because someone used a small, under-capacity dump trailer, told the loader to load it with a 7yd loader and blew the tires and bent the axles when he dumped it. A lawsuit ensued and guess what----no more little guys. ....

I agree with Earthwrks, slag will ruin the bed of your truck or trailer even if it is dumped on delicately. If you line the bottom and sides with plywood, It wants to slide off as it unloads.

I'd hire a commercial guy to deliver the slag and pay a little more. Sounds like a one time deal, so that is cheaper than buying something that may get wrecked in the process.

For hauling small amounts of soil, you may want to look at just getting a Loadhandler. Northern Tool sells one for a full size pickup trucks 352-2607 for $150.00.

It is like a liner that is stretched out on the box connected to a hand winch on the tailgate. You stretch it out, dump the load on top and then hand crank it off. The liner rolls up kinda like a heavy duty curtain. I'd do more, smaller loads. ....

1*I know what you mean here. I bought a new ford pickup in 71 . Hauled a few loads of gravel from a gravel plant which scratched most of the paint from the floor. Maybe you could put a bed liner or bed mat in the bed.
If I just knew someone who has a pick up with a dumper on it that I could borrow.
Or find a decent used PICK UP with one already on it.
2*All I have are compact import pick ups + Wonder if Load handler makes anything for them ? ? ?.

Loadhandler also come in a smaller model for compact pickup trucks. It is item #351-2607 and sells for $89.99 and is only 18lbs. shipping weight. They also sell a mat that allows it to slide easier. (needs to be trimmed for compact trucks) That is item 354-2607, it weighs 32 lbs. and sell for $62.99. It is shown on page 76 of their Summer/Fall 06 catalog. ....

We have two of those slide in units in duallies.

They are *not* used as dump trucks though. They serve a very limited an specific pupose though, and do it very well.

The main task they do is firewood, we generate and sell a lot of it. We also use a lot ourselves. When you are paying for labour by the hour you start to look at things very differently. An energetic young fella can throw off a pickup load of wood in 5 minutes. A dump can do it in seconds. No big savings, but when I can put a senior employee on 'light duty' by driving the pickup instead of the strong-backed kid, I save a lot on insurance and antacid!!!

The other thing it's real handy for is mixed loads. We often do jobs were we need a few yards of compost or soil, heavy moist stuff, and a few yards of mulch, light airy stuff. But we don't want them mixed, or have to dump one to get to the other, leftovers always go back to the yard. So we load the pickup with the mulch, and the dump trailer with the compost or soil. It sure beats two trips.

They are also far handier for light loads into the city, big city driving is not fun, with a dump trailer it's down-right miserable. It also makes parking a whole bunch easier.

About the only big advantage I can see to a homeowner is times like a trip to the cabin or someplace where you want to take some material, as well as a trailer, 4 wheelers, a boat maybe.

Best of luck. ....

I think the important thing in all of this is to bear in mind, the right tool for the right job is critical.

You don't use a hatchet to cut down a forest, or a sub-CUT to farm a thousand acres.

If you need the capability to carry & dump an amount within your trucks GVWR on a regular basis, then a slide-in dump is a good option.

Likewise, if you only ever have to carry a few thousand pounds, a semi-truck is not the best choice.

If you do snow removal work then so much the better, a slide-in unit makes a dandy sander, if the truck is equipped with a snowplow you can often save some $$$ by using the plows hydraulics instead of buying a second set.

Best of luck. ....

A special thanks to all who suggested the Load Handler.

**********

Bought a load handler for my 1986 Dodge D 50 Pick Up at Wall Mart yesterday.
Tried it out this morning.
It sure beats shoveling the dirt off of the truck.
Don't know how many BX 23 loader buckets I can haul in it at a time.
So far 3 buckets in the truck is working pretty good and it sure beats hauling one bucket down the hill at a time with the BX.
Only problem I ran into was I couldn't get back up the front yard hill after unloading the last pickup load of dirt.
Would be nice if the D 50 was a 4 wheel drive.
Didn't know the LOAD HANDLERS worked so well or I would have had one a long time ago!
----->>
I don't know If I'm overloading my truck or not because I don't know what A BX23 loader of dirt weighs and I don't know the empty weight of my Dodge D 50. G V W is 4045 pounds.
