OK roll your eyes, another wild question from Peters.

Years ago my father had a wheel barrow. We gave it heavy use from mixing concrete to hauling wood in to the house. I don't remember ever needing a new tire in 15 years. My barrow has had the tire replaced twice and it is due for another as it is not holding air. I went to the store and all they have is chinese tires. I suspect it will last 3-4 years like the last.
A) Does any one else have this problem?
B) How long are the tires lasting?
C) Has any one tried the American Polyurethane tires, posted below?

The last tire and rim I bought was 20 some dollars. Seems like the wheel barrow was only 60, but it is heavy duty and I have seen them for $100.

How many miles did you have on the last tire? Did you preform the required PM at the proper times? What was the tread wear rating? Was the air pressure maitained? Just jokeing I have had the same WB since 1984 from SAMS, It has been used to the extreme. I have bought 2 wheels from Wal mart. The most receint one will last a lot longer now that I have a tractor. I have not done alot of research, but hardware stores and the such seem to stock the same rims and wheels. The ones on your link maybe the thing. ....

It is not wear that is getting me. I also do not use it that much with trailers and tractors. It is ozone cracking that is distroying the Chinese rubber. I think they are 2 generations behind in rubber technology. ....

There are 600 million chinese, It would be safe to say they have a rubber problem. I cant think of anything that I paid $20 for that last very long. As miserable as the tires are it is tough to push or pull a wb with a flat tire. I have tried and was glad to give the man $20 for a rim and tire, never just bought a tire. ....

Last I checked there were 1.3 billion Chinese. I guess I should say the Amerityre urethane rubber tire is closed cell and should last the life of the wheel barrow. For $30. ....

A couple of years ago I bought three WB's from a hardware store that was going out of business. I kept one, gave one to a friend who just bought his first house, and gave one to my dad who 30+ year old WB was being held togather with 30+ years of cement(but NEVER had a flat tire.) Within a few weeks none of the tires would hold air. I took the rims off and pached the innertube several times. Finnaly after sheer frustration I took all the tires, rims and tubes to a local tire place to be foam filled. The owners son looked at the tires and said he could fill them but when he took the tire off the rim he found a few small sharp points (from casting the tire I guess)that he was able to grind/sand down. We havn't had a leak in two years! You cant see them in the tire you can feel for them. but there was 4 to 10 per tire. ....

Yep, my POS wheelbarrow tire won't hold air either. Not so bad since I mostly use the FEL now. Whenever I need th WB, I have to re-seat and fill the tire. Sucks so the barrow doesn't get much use. Driving the tractor is easier.

But then I don't do much cement work. ....

Mines a vintage 77' on it's second tire with the first after being tubed lasted till about 98' when the dry rot got to bad and I didn't trust it any more when it was replaced by a new tire and tube and it stays up all the time even when in freezing temps. Tractor's are always available for heavy work but has some concrete in a few spots abd a whole about the size of a dime in the bottm thats going to get some coat hanger melted in it this summer. Have a little four wheeler wagon that probably is a 80 on it's original rubber that was tubed but on it's second deck which broke from when using it to move side walk slate. It's a good wagon for most all jobs and was expensive at the time probably 150 but it's been well used for most everything with removable wooden sides. ....

I replaced both tires on my big wheel barrow with solid polyurethane tires and love 'em. It's a little more bouncy now, but not having to worry about air is worth it. ....

I bought a WB about 3 yrs ago and the tire was flat in under 30mins,so I bought the bottle of slime that is for a car tire and put it in.Now after 3yrs and countless nails and such I am convinced it would take nothing short of a shotgun blast to hurt that tire. Sometimes too much is just enough ....

I attached the body and handles of my dads 0ld 1940s wheelbarrow to an old push mower body the rest of it was shot except for the tire and wheel.
I use it for mixing cement.
The tire and wheel is keep around for a spare as it will fit the front of my 2 bolens and MTD tractors.

I just noticed this thread.

Peters, we gave up on 'regular' WB tires a long time ago. If you have a construction grade WB, it will, or should, have an 4" x 8" rim on it.

Put a 4.00/4.80 X 8" trailer tire on it.

It is harder, rolls easier, and will last forever.

They cost about $20 each.

Best of luck. ....

Peters, yes I've seen them.

They look good, but at $20 a tire so do trailer tires. LOL.

Best of luck. ....

Well, you could always find an old "tired" out bush hog and fabricate a mount for the compound tire off of it. Those compound tires should last a lifetime or two. ;O) ....

Durable tire yes, but your arms won't be....

A compound or laminated tires has almost no give to it, that means almostall the shock load from any bumps will be transmitted up the handles into the person 'driving' it.

The advantage we find with a trailer tire is that we can vary the pressure easily to suit the conditions. There is so little volume that a small air tank or even bicycle pump works great.

On a hard surface like paving a trailer tire rolls so easy it's unbelievable, it makes the job much easier.

If you do much work like that consider putting a caster wheel on each side just lower and outside of each back leg. It then converts your wheel barrow into a 3 wheeled cart. In that manner even the slightest of wives can easily move a heavy load or smooth ground and it can't even topple over on them.

Best of luck. ....

I caught the pun there Randy, I just forgot a few points I wanted to ramble on about, errrr, I mean 'suggest' to anyone who still uses a "two handled convertible" instead of the FEL bucket.

My missus complained about using a barrow, but won't use the tractor, go figure.

Best of luck. ....

Much of the flat tire problems would be solved if they (we) put a tube inside. It's surprising how long tires hold up with tubes, easily a decade. Even if they go flat you don't have to worry about sealing the bead, just air it back up.

My wheel barrel has double front wheels, and theres always one tire low or pulled away from the rim , can be a real pain to get air back into, they dont have tubes. There about 4 years old and still dont show any signs of dry rot, so I wont replace them till needed. ....
