I own a Shibaura SD2003 and have had a recent problem with the oil light coming on after an hour or so of use. I've recently changed the oil and filter. I'm using a NAPPA filter. Never had this problem before and have had the tractor about 3 years. Any ideas what may be causing the light to come on. Thanks for any ideas.

You might say if the new oil is the same viscosity and if you happened to be doing heavy work on an exceptionally hot day.

I suppose it's obvious but the main question to answer is whether the oil pressure actually is low. Of less importance is whether the sending unit and gauge are properly working. I'd be inclined to hook a gauge into the system and see what the pressure actually is. If the engine is a 3-cylinder one, it maybe similar to one of three engines used in Ford 1310 - 1710's and I could look up the oil pressure specs for them. No guarantee it be right for a Shibaura though.

Less obvious is that the problem might be the filter itself. If you haven't used a NAPA one before, I'd be tempted to put the old one back on temporarily if it's still around and reasonably clean unless you're certain the x-refed filter works OK. The filter elements of some x-refed filters aren't equivalent to original equipment and they also may have pressure bypassed or anti-drainback features originals lack. It is tempting to think of the filter or oil since those were changed immediately before the problem was noticed. You do have to ensure that you aren't running the engine with insufficient oil pressure though.

Definitely DO put a gauge on the engine and verify actual "eye ball" oil pressure. If it is within limits, check your oil pressure light switch on the engine. Hopefully it is the switch/pressure sender switch. If the gauge pressure is low, more than likely you are "HOSED". You may get lucky with an oil & filter change and get the pressure back up enough to be in limits. A temporary "half ass" measure is to add some type of oil thicken agent such as STP, etc. as a last resort AFTER you have tried the above steps. A rebuild or oil pump replacement is the correct fix in this case. I am thinking it is a pressure sender switch. ....

Thanks for the help. I'll definitely check the true pressure and then go from there. The oil used this time was a different brand. This oil (15W40) was for diesels, but I believe the last oil change, I used an oil from Agri Supply for farm equipment, so I'll check that also. Thanks again.

First time using this discussion board...it's nice to know there's expert advice out there! ....

FYI. When I was going to remove the oil sending unit to check pressure with a gauge, I noticed the sending unit was not tightened completely. I was able to tighten 4 - 6 turns more. After tightening, the light did not come on as before, so it appears that the loss of pressure was due to the sending unit being loose. I also checked the pressure "cold" and was getting about 50 psi at idle. I still have the pressure gauge on and plan to monitor it while working the tractor. Do you know if this pressure is normal? ....

15W-40 is pretty thick when cold and intially starting up. Is that kind of pressure in my Cummins when I start it first start of the day too. After it warms up; it settles down to around 40 psi. 35 - 40 psi I would think is well within limits. Sounds like you may have found your problem. ....
