I cannot shift the transfer case on my SD4043 out of 4th gear. The tractor has a four speed transfer case and a three speed transmision in addition to a High/Low range selector for a total of 24 forward and 8 reverse speeds. Everything was shifting great until this morning. I am not sure if it is related, but this morning while pulling a 6' blade through a very muddy area, I engaged the 4WD and locked the differential. (The traction was incrediable!) Later in the day when I tried to shift the transfer case, it would not budge out of 4th! I cannot remember if I was in the 4th range or not while I had the Diff Lock on or if I shifted into it later. The transmission, High/Low, 4WD/2WD, and Diff Lock all shift without problem; I just can't shift out of 4th range.

Any ideas as to what may have happened or how I can free it up?

Thanks!

I'm guessing that it's similar to the TX in my Ford 1710 with a creeper kit. I'm not sure how much help there's going to be here because most things take a manual and prior TX experience. You might say if the shifter for the 3 TX plus reverse gear is on the steering column or TX top cover to help ID the TX.

Some linkages do have detend balls or other parts that can wear or bend and lock. These often can be repaired without too much disassembly. Some parts are accessible under the top plate, but disassembly shouldn't be attempted without a manual. There are a number of seals that may be damaged and definitely a top-plate gasket. Unfortunately, a bent shifting-fork is a likely candidate, and they can't be replaced without splitting the tractor.

However, some things can be checked. I'd check to see if there's at least 3/4" free-play at the top of the clutch pedal. I'd also note how the clutch feels when it starts engaging. It should come up a bit off the floor before it engages and the feel solid. It shouldn't gallop if feathered.

If the tractor hasn't been moved much, I'd take it out of 4wd and pull forward and reverse a few times. I'd also put the tractor against a tree and in 2wd check to see that only one rear wheel spins (which would indicate that the diff lock and 4wd are disengaged).

If it were in 4wd, I might lift the front wheels with the loader and then try the ranges again. Sometimes axle windup will make engaging or disengaging 4wd or the ranges difficult. However, there shouldn't be much windup when mucking in mud. I'd probably lift the wheels and try it even if it seems to be in 2wd.

Sometimes gunk can lock up the linkage. I would check the external linkage. If I was grasping at straws I might drain and flush the TX and change oil, but that would be a last ditch effort. Hope you weren't steering while the diff-lock was engaged. That could put a lot of stress on the drive train.

I posted some pictures (I will spare you the thousand words!) that may help at the following link:
http://webpages.charter.net/brooke/brooke/tractor_pictures.htm

As you can see in the pictures, the shift arms are on the top cover. I did drive about a 100 yards or so on hardpack with the diff lock engaged. However, I did not make any turns with the diff lock engaged.

I suspected possible axle windup or binding and tried shifting into various combinations. However, I did not try any combinations with and without load as you suggest. Nor did I verify that 4WD was infact disengaging. I am very anxious to try your recommendations on Friday. They make a lot of sense.

I did note that the clutch pedal had 1.5" of free play. The clutch engages very smoothly and feels very solid.

The pics look very similar to my 1710 but not identical. My TX is an optional synchromesh TX that has the gear-shifter on the steering column and live-PTO. The standard TX is very similar to the pics. Neither the gears nor the ranges are synchromesh. It has a TX driven PTO with built-in over-running clutch. I think both TX's were offered with an optional creeper kit, which probably is your high/low range selector.

The spec for my clutch adjustment free-travel is 3/4". No guarantee that yours has the same spec, but you might try taking some free-travel out of it. If the clutch has a warp and is slightly dragging, you might not notice the drag but it could be enough to keep those non-synchronized range gears from shifting. I'd hate to over-rate the possibility but it'd be nice if that was the solution.
