I just bought a tractor, any information concerning it would be appreciated. It is a Shibaura (SP1740 stamped on block) its supposed to be a 1979 year, 4 wd, 3 cyl, 3 speed (on dash) Eng Model: 5753, 20 HP/ 17 HP @ PTO (I've been told) Does this tractor crossover to the Ford 1520? as of right now it seems to run fine. I am not well educated at this time concerning Grey Market Tractors, but am willing to learn. I have checked out the various Web Sites, this one seems to have the most going on. ThanksVince

Good tractor I think. Well, I have a Ford 1710, which is basically a Shibaura so I'm biased. I used to think that engine parts would cross over if they had the same engine code. A dealer who posts here says that's not always true. I also seem to remember him indicating that he has e-mail contact with the company in Japan. Perhaps he'll provide a comment. Regarding engine codes: I have the Ford 13, 15 & 17 10-series manual, and I can say that the engine code (cast into the side of the block) you mention isn't the one for those tractors. I believe the first production year for the 1520 was 1987. Your tractor is older and maybe has a different engine. The 1500 engine was a 2-cylinder, so the 1500 isn't a candidate. I guess I'm not being too helpful. Maybe a good NH dealer would know if your engine was used in any of the Ford compacts. I too like this board. It's a little less chatty than some, but it's more technically oriented and stays closer to tractors and equipment. Questions usually field some pretty good answers here. ....

TomG:
Thanks for your response, I just ordered a manual for Ford models 1120,1220, 1520, 1720, 1920, 2120 from repairmanual.com, I found a dealer who was listing a Shibaura SP1740 with a column shiftand he stated it was like a Ford 1520, so I am taking a wild chance and I ordered the manual and when I get it hopefully I can determine if it is like one of thes models or at least what its not. On my right fender I have a box attached to a Joystick that controls the raising and lowering of the 3 point, and in this box is a row of rheostats that are supposed to control a hydraulic control arm to tilt the 3 point, does yours have this feature?

Vince,

Usually when someone inquires about their grey market tractor in regards to the year model and such I have the unpleasant duty of telling them that their tractor is much older. Not this time! Your tractor was actually built in 1984 & 1985. The displacement of the engine is 954cc. That may help you a little more in finding an engine crossover. Also, you may want to check out the Yahoo Grey Market Tractor Club for help/info. There is a Yahoo Shibaura club but is not very active.

Vince: What you describe isn't familiar to me. On my 1710, there is a typical 3ph sector-control lever. The lever does have an adjustable lower stop that rides in a arced slot and can be locked by a knob. The adjustable stop is typical and allows the depth of a 3ph with position control to be set. There also is a typical flow-control valve knob below the seat. The flow control valve adjusts the speed of lowering of the 3ph. Heavy implements may 'bang down' with too great of flow. A mower may not follow ground contours close enough with too little flow. The 3ph won’t lower with the valve full off. A feature of my 3ph to know about is that it has a detend (notch) at the top end of the lever travel. The detend is used when a hydraulic port on the 3ph is used to power an external hydraulic device. The detend should not be used unless something is powered by the port. It seems like the port would be useful to provide rear hydraulics. However, everything I want to power from the rear is a 3ph implement. The port is useless because the 3ph goes to full up when in the detend position. Guess you’re happy the tractor is much newer than you thought and is within the 1520 production years. ....
