I just purchased a P21F with front end loader for $4,700 used with 100 hours (looks new). I have two problems. The first is it will not go into 4 wheel drive. When I move the lever nothing (no noise and does not engage). The linkage looks ok. Previous owner tells me to engage differential lock-but this does not engage the front wheels.

The second problem is I can put it into crawl speed for gears 1-4 or fast speed. But when I move the outer lever next to the seat it does not do anything when out of gear and will grind if the tractor is in gear and will not engage (I am using the clutch while trying to engage). Any help would be great. Thanks.

The previous owner may have been saying that to get more traction lock the rear diff -- because the front drive doesn't work. With the other problem you might want to see if there's a used vehicle defect-disclosure requirement in your jurisdiction. ....

If your levers are rotating rods in the transmission have someone to work them while you watch to see if there is any slippage between the levers and the rods. Do the shift levers sit in a slot such as fender? If so are you sure the lever does not hit the end of the slot before fully shifting? Hope it is the linkage and nothing in the transmission. ....

I purchased the tractor "as is" so I have nobody to blame but myself for not noticing that there were some problems which I still would be happy based on the price.

I broght the tractor to a tractor repair. They split the tractor (Ouch $650) and found that the last time the transmition was put together, the person mistakenly put a gear on the wrong side of a circle clip, preventing the gear from shifting. Thank god we had the parts manual or would never have figured it out.

Thanks for the responses. ....

Glad all's well and sounds like you found a good shop. Other Shibaura owners may wonder where the manual came from and if it's in English. ....
