Yes, we have one standard PTO speed that all our turning attachments are designed for whether a fast-spinning mower or a slow-turning rototiller. (At some nominal engine speed, the PTO turns at 540 RPM.) But four speeds is standard for tractors designed for use in Japan, where certain attachments are designed to spin faster. For instance, they have tillers designed to froth a paddy.

Either yours is grey-market or the company doesn't change to our convention in their export models. Some export models have two speeds, the standard 540 and around twice that. Not sure why they thought we could use a 1000-rpm attachment.

You might want to lock your control in the slowest position. Another person using it at a different speed could wreck an attachment or even kill somebody. ....

It is also used as a means to obtain 540 or 1000 rpm without racing the engine for low power demand items like sprayer pumps.

By setting the PTO to the fastest speed and then running the engine at a fast idle you will have 1000 rpm without having to go to WOT.

They also usually have one PTO speed that is geared to drive a trailer equipped with a drive axle. In applications like rugged terrain or rice paddies having driven trailer wheels makes a big difference.

Best of luck. ....

That sure is a neat idea.

There are some uses of the 1000 RPM with USA equipment. I have only seen it on tractors of say 100 hp up. The shaft is different than the 540 in size and number of splines. ....
