My D2650FD has been overheating when bushhogging lately. Bushhogging is the only activity that I keep it throttled up for a long time. There doesn't appear to be any coolant leaks, so I flushed the radiator and replaced the cap with a new one rated for 18 lbs. That seems to have worked, but I am concerned that I don't know what the correct pressure rating should be.
Does anyone here know?

Hopefully you saved the old one. Asian caps are sometimes stamped with a (metric) pressure rating in Atmospheres. Should you find a number like 0.3 or 0.43 (maybe higher), multiply it by 14.696 to get PSI.

On the K3 (MT180D) engine the cap is 12.8 PSI
Stands to reason that the manufacturer would have a standard.

Hope that helps. ....

Correct pressure for cooling system is like for tires: it's just a compromise number, because go higher or lower and you get pros and cons. (If you go high, one con is more likelihood of springing a leak as the equipment ages.)

Cap gaskets eventually wear and leak, so you could be seeing the effect of a new cap rather than a higher-pressure one.

I'm sure you know the usual checks (fan, passageways, thermostat if fitted), but if you're using plain water, the right mixture of antifreeze raises the BP as much as higher pressure. ....

No, I'm sorry - it's not. The cooling system pressure rating is an engineered number - not unlike oil pressure. Installing a cooling system pressure cap of a mismatched rating can - at a minimum - result in either overheating (under-rated cap) or leakage (over-rated cap).

When you install a NEW cap of the CORRECT pressure rating - and THEN see leakage (or overheating), you know that it's time to start replacing OTHER cooling system components too.
