A customer of ours blew his 2610 apart this morning.
A maintained clean tractor in fact we just put a new 6 ft cutter on it for him last week. His mistake was he bragged on how he loved her etc, etc.
Well he came by our shop this morning with the news. No noise no warning just bang and both sides of the block a plate sized hole now.
I have called around but no luck if anyone knows of a salvage unit or access to a new engine please pass it along.

Dave Williams

Tractortips gives 'Universal' as the engine make for two models of 2610's. Ford tended to use their own engines in Farm tractors but there was a 4-cylinder version of the 4000 that could have used a different engine. The 2610 uses a 4-cylinder engine that's in the ball park for a Ford 4000 size. A Ford/Long relationship might have come through Fiat.

I did a search on universal diesel engines. The hits were mostly for marine diesels. I suppose the company could have specialized since the days of the Ford '000 series tractors. If it is a Ford engine there should be a decent supply of salvage and after-market parts. ....

I did not know for sure because we had a long in our shop as a trade and the engine looked very much like a ford. I know, how can you tell by looking at and engine who makes it? Well when you look at them all day you can start to tell them apart. But remember i said looked I could not find any casting numbers to reference so i am guessing. ....

The Universal is UTB, Romania. The Ford connection is through the Escorts plant in India who built Ford tractors for Ford from about 1969 till New Holland took over.
I don't know about the English built Longs, they may have been a Ford derivative as well.
I know Long offers new engines to fit Ford tractors (through Escorts), but I don't know if they have one for the 2610, which is discontinued. Your best bet might be a used one if anyone can come up with a lead for you. Good luck. ....

The 2610 I have has a Fiat engine. As far as I know all Longs have Fiat engines and correct me if I'm wrong please. I have a neighbor that has a 1977 Long and the engine looks just like the 1997 model I have.I think his is a 560. May be less HP but same design. The 610 Long has the same engine as the 2610. Long only made a few changes to the tractor over the years. Sheet metal for one and they added a 9 inch spacer between the tranny and rear end. Big improvement I might add too.Steering was change 3 times that I know of. Other than that it stayed the same.

I know where there's a 610 setting. I don't know why it was parked but can get in touch with the guy and see what's wrong with it. I'm in Va. and that may or may not be to far for you. I'll give em a call if you like. I'm sure the engine on it would have to be rebuilt. That tractor was farmed hard and has a bunch of hours on it. Expect you could get it cheap though.

On the reply about the Farmtrac. My new 80 will be delivered the end of the week. It has a Perkins 4 cyl. engine in it. The 70 on down have the ford type engine and those are 3 cylinder. The 2610 is 4 cylinders so they're not the same engine.

The 2610 is now 680 with new emissions gadgets on board.

Long has three different tractors now. Landtrac, Longtrac and Farmtrac.

Bigtractor if you find out what came loose in the engine please give us a report. Sounds like a connecting rod or maybe a wrist pin broke. ....

I have a 2610 Long with loader and its for sale. I just purchased a new John Deere 5045 and my Long outperforms the John Deere. My 2610 Long has afresh engine rebuilt by an Arkansas School maintenance program purportedly. It also out weights the JD and has 20 more HP. If you would like pictures advise. I do want to hang on to it until I finish some jobs the JD can't handle. :-) ....
