Have a New Holland TC40D w/FEL. I want to lift 1000 - 1200 lb round bales of hay with a bale spear mounted on the loader. Loader spec says lift capacity at the pivot is 2000 lbs and at 19.7" out it is 1540 lbs. Question: 1) With proper balast, can I really lift them? 2) If so, with a spear that attaches to the front of the bucket or do I need take off the bucket to mount the spear back by the pivot?PS: For the extra balast, I was going to stab a bale with a spear mounted on the 3pt. Will the load lifted with the 3pt reduce the lift of my loader hydraulics?

Michigander, I have a couple of neighbors who routinely do what you're saying; i.e., using a bale spear on their front end loaders, frequently with another bale on the Hay King spear on the 3-point, but sometimes just the one on the front. But they both have much larger tractors than a TC40 and they remove the bucket to put the bale spear on the front end loader. I suppose you could mount a bale spear on the bucket, but I've not seen it done. ....

I don't believe a load on the 3ph affects lift capacity of the loader. However, there are tire ratings and other gross weight considerations. When the 3ph remote control valve is in a neutral position, the cylinder is, in effect, is isolated from the rest of the system. Most 3ph's do have their own pressure relief valves for load shocks through. However, a 3ph plumbed ahead of the loader would rob the loader when the 3ph is in lift position. My 3ph hitch is plumbed behind the loader. I don't know which way is more common in open centre systems. ....

I overlooked the last sentence of that question, didn't I? All you have to do is lift one end at a time, i.e., pick up the bale on the rear without trying to raise the front end loader at the time same time and then there will be no difference in the power of the front end loader. Of course, the bales will undoubtedly be far enough apart that's the way you do it anyway. ....

Michigander,
I move 4x4 and 4x5 round bales with my Massey Ferguson 1250. What I have found out is that I need to have a bale on the back and one on the loader to keep every thing safe. I pick up the rear bale first so that I have enough ballast for the one on the loader. I believe that the MF 1250 is a frame size smaller than the TC40.

One of the reasons the people are removing the buckets on the bigger tractors is visibility. On your tractor you will need to bring the load closer to the tractor for better stability. You will be able to lift the bales but they move the lift point out further that the pivot point. ....

Jerry, You are doing exactly what I was planning. Does your loader bale spear hook to the bucket or did you remove the bucket to mount the spear.

Thanks all for your replies. ....

Michigander,
I use homemade bucket forks. They clamp on to the bucket. I did have a spear mounted above the forks, but it was hard to get the bale on. So I took off the spear.

hey guys, i have a jd870 w/FEL and i move 750 lb and 1,000 lb round bales on the loader with homemade 4x4 wood forks that i bolt on. when loading i stab a roll with my 3 pt hay king spear and pick up a roll with the front forks. works great. i would not try to lift the rolls with the FEL and no counterweight on the 3 pt. go slow when moving and keep the load low to the ground and DO NOT turn fast. ....
