A question for those who use their FEL with crushed rock and hard things like that: the paint gets scraped off with the stone and I don't want rust to set in. Should I clean and paint-spray the FEL just about every time I use it on gravel/crushed rock or just keeping it clean is OK and then painting it at the end of the season?

A smart alec reply I know but in my opinion if the FEL has paint on it you really do not need it. ....

After you figure out how to keep paint on your FEL maybe you can work on growing grass in the kids play yard under the swings. :) ....

I wire brush mine every couple of years and then respray it flat black. I don't spend much time on redoing the inside but try to keep the outside looking nicer. If you use it more, it polishes or works off the rust build-up. If you do snow in the winter, tilt the bucket so the snow pack drops out and don't turn to water and rust. ....

If you keep tools in a dry place like my garage I have found that they don't seem to rust.

I like to have my tools so that they are not rusty, even spades that are bare metal stay rust free if kept in a dry garage and if possible allowed to dry in the sun before storing.

I get angry when my wife or kids use my stuff and leave it outside overnight for days without me knowing. Leaving stuff outside seems to be the quickest invite for rust. It may be psychological but rusty stuff seems harder to work with, duller spade, harder digging until it cleans up. At least with hand tools.

I have yet to paint the bucket on the loader, never seem to get around to it. ....

DRankin,

It was substantive all right, but that substance smelled a lot like what I was moving around with that FEL last night. :)

For real, I got the point - keep the FEL clean and dry, give it a paint job when it starts looking hideous. ....

We use a little portable hand pump weed sprayer full of the cheapest vegetable oil we can find.

A homeowner could use a hand spray bottle, it's a good use for veggie oil from the kitchen that's gone a little off.

If the machine is going to be parked for a while, we spray down any exposed metal with it, buckets and or moldboards included.

It will wash off after a while from exposure to rain though, so if the machine is parked outside it needs to be re-applied periodically.

Best of luck. ....

Hey!

I spray my stuff with Silicon. WHy bother sanding and repainting, next time you use it the Rust and the paint would come off. Maybe the top edges that don't always make contact, paining will be ok. My FEL looks like it was dropped from 40,000 feet and it is barley a year old. I was told I could replace the FEL for $500 and I will use this one until there ain't much left to it, then replace it.
Ahh! maybe I am all wet.. I used it for plowing this winter and yup! has rust, but I figure, when I start moving more of them Vermont Boulders that were just little fellas last year, I will wear off whatever i put on it. I only sprayed it and it still looks like crap, guess you could paint it and make it look like Nice Crap. ....

My FEL is down to bare metal almost all the time, however everytime I need to paint something that will fit in the bucket, I use the bucket as a spray booth and that at least keeps some of the bucket coated with paint. Granted my bucket right now is green, orange, black, and touches of white, but I like it better than the rust. ....

IMHO I would not use any type of oil vegetable or otherwise. Vegetable oil can disolve or soften paint and remove decals and/or the print on them---especially when exposed to heat and sunlight (some brand-name liquid soaps such as Murphy's Oil Soap are made from veg. oil). Next time you're painting with enamels or latex paint, or working on the tractor try washing up straight vegetable oil and water. After eating some snack foods, touch a newspaper and watch the print come off. ....
