Besides a good battery and starter, diesels really only need fuel and air to start. But separately. They seldom start at all when air gets into the high pressure fuel lines (the metal ones). This is common after the folks forget to keep the fuel tank full, or to dump water out of the sediment bowl. Start by making sure that the fuel delivery system is properly primed, and that clean dry fuel is actually being delivered to the injectors.

Insufficient air is usually caused by a dirty air filter element, but can also be caused by critters nesting in somewhere in the air intake system too - or by a collapsed intake runner. Clean/inspect/repair/replace as required.

Cold starts are always made easier when the compression release (if so equipped) is used. Also, cold starts put more of a demand on the battery and the starter. Thick/dirty oil will also slow down an otherwise good starter, as can a clogged oil pickup screen. But all these items should be on your fall maintenance list - to be checked off BEFORE cold weather sets in.

Long story short, complaints that are limited to "my tractor won't start" really don't give us much to work with.

How fast is it turning? Cranking a diesel slowly can't ignite the fuel.

Unlike a gas engine that can start when cranked slowly, even by hand, a diesel cylinder is like a bullet. If a cartrige primer is whacked by a firing pin, it detonates, but put the primer in a vice and force the pin onto it to the same pressure, and it won't fire. As with a diesel, the stimulus must be strong enough and sudden. ....

Greg, My C144 starts, but now runs terrible. Absolutely gutless. I cannot find the location of changing the Fuel Filter. Can you give me a suggestion where to look? I'ld like to start there.

I did use quite a bit of Starter Fluid and I hope I did not go over board with it. Sprayed directly into the valve cover... ....

Can't quite imagine what spraying it into the valve cover would do, but as long as it started......

Don't know the C144, but Google suggests that you should look for a spin-on type. The C144 is said to be similar to the Massey-Ferguson 1010, and that a possible fuel filter is the NAPA 3662 or WIX 33662. If Hinomoto members here can't expand on this, there's more good info here: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/grey-market-tractors/105002-hinomoto-c-144-a.html
