I recently had a cabin built that is all open inside except for the bathroom and loft. The amish builders used 8" rafters with 3/4" plywood to support a metal roof. They intalled a roof ridge the entire length of the roof. I would like to eventually finish the ceiling using pine tongue and grove. What type of insulation should be used and how should it be applied to allow for proper venting? What options do I have and how do they cost? I would like to get the ceiling insulated so I can heat it this winter, the pine t&g will probably be installed next fall or winter.

I would use 4 in. fiberglass bats between the rafters which would leave a 3-1/2 in gap between the bats and the decking for ventilation. Then I would nail 1/2 in or 3/4 in foam board to the rafters before installing the sheathing. ....

I'd probably install vapour barrier before the ceiling went on. I think the idea is an OK retro-fit but it'd be good to check local codes and building practices. ....
