I have a 25 hp Simplicity tractor with a hydraulic blade on the front and a pto on the back which I use a roto-tiller for. the other day I hit some chain link fence whick binded up the blades on the tiller causing them not to spin. I removed the fence and the blades turn when the roto-tiller is in the air. When i place them on the ground the blades and the pto arm stop moving. Any suggestions on the problem? I was told it might be the clutch. thanks for any help.

Walkom,

I would agree with the person who told you that the clutch may be bad.

Since the tiller is turning when in the air, it's a good indication that you have a limited amount of power to the tiller, and that everything in that system is functioning properly......ie, no broken or sheared pins, broken shafts, etc.

The loss of power to the tiller, when under a load, is a clear sign that the clutch is badly worn.

To prevent this problem in the future, it's always best to have a slip clutch installed on your tiller's drive shaft, and then make sure that it is adjusted and functioning properly.

Walkom,

I may have jumped the gun a bit here.

You might want to check to see if someone hasn't replaced a shear pin with a roll pin, or a bolt at some point in the past. If so, the pin or bolt could have broken off in such a way as to allow it to make contact with the mating surface just enough to allow the shaft to turn.

I'd check the PTO shaft and the tiller's gearbox for any shear pins that may be broken before looking at the clutch.

Do you have a rear mounted finish mower, or a bush hog that you can attach to your tractor? Any rear mounted PTO driven implement will tell you if your clutch worn.

If you don't have another implement, maybe one of your neighbors has one you could try. If not the neighbors, see if your local dealer might have a PTO driven rear mounted mower that you could use on his lot to see if your clutch is working OK.

I'm not familiar with the Simplicity tractors. I'm not sure what's involved with a clutch replacement. You'll likely need a shop manual to see what needs to be done to replace the clutch, if that's the problem.

Check back with us again once you identify the culprit.

Walkom,

I might have another trick for you to try. Please don't get hurt doing this.

Raise your tiller, THEN SHUT THE TRACTOR's ENGINE DOWN. Place wheel chocks under your tractor's tires. With the tiller lifted off the ground and blocked up so that it can't fall on your foot.......Place the tractor's PTO drive lever in gear. This will engage the PTO drive.

If you have a breaker bar, you can now attempt to turn the tractor's PTO shaft. You shouldn't be able to turn it by hand. If the clutch is good, it will prevent the PTO shaft from turning. If you can turn the tractor's PTO shaft with the breaker bar, your clutch is slipping badly.

Please be careful.

If your pto shaft is not rotating when the tiller engages the dirt, you have tractor problems. I believe that is what you said when you first posted that it stops. kt ....
