Would like some help deciding on a standby generator. I'm looking at a 12kw Gillette air cooled or 12kw air cooled Winco. Anyone with knowlege or experience with generators. Thanks

I can't speak to the winco. We have had a 14KW LP Gillette with Kohler V-twin engine for going on 14 years and it has never given a lick of trouble. Probably 600 hours on it now and we would buy another. ....

I didn't know Gillette used Kohler engines. They have a Subaru on the 12kw. Would that change your mind on buying one? I also heard on this forum a problem with the fuse box. Thanks ....

Well, I'm really biased against Honda engines and think Kohlers are the best but I'd buy a Subaru too.

Maybe the fuse problem you read was mine, I forgot about that. It's just a simple fuseholder that I replaced, not really a box at all. IIRC I suspected some corrosion in the wiring (sort of a wet environment here) and the fuse holder broke when I opened it up. Not a big problem but, yes, that is something that I had to fix. ....

I had a Winco 9000W generator up until last month, it was 11 years old when I got it. The model I had came with a 16 HP Briggs and Stratton Twin cylinder gas engine. During the Sandy outage the fuel pump failed, no big deal, $25 part. This was a commercial rated unit and man the thing was a beast in weight, really too heavy in my opinion.

Worked well but deafening loud noisy machine, had to wear ear protection even with it 100 feet away when outside.

Replaced it with a Honda EM6500SX, extemely quiet, can stand right next to it and talk to someone. The loudness of the Winco was really not that big a deal to me as I am in the woods with no nearby neighbors. But I really like the quiet of the Honda.

The Honda has automatic choke so if you want to start it with a remote you can, for those nights when it is sitting in water and you are worried about shock hazard :(

No info on Gillette. ....

I was told that Gillette generator is the best air cooled standby unit on the market and only Winco comes close because of the honda engine. I can't find anyone that owns a new Gillette with the Subaru engine to get a honest opinion on them. Thanks ....

The only brand I know anything about is Winco, but it is PTO powered not engine powered. Mine is probably five years old and has never failed so far anyhow.
The dealer who sold it to me said that generators should be used under load a couple times a year even if there is no emergency, just to keep the moisture out of things.

hardwood that makes sense. my alternator in my old kohler burnt out because the salt air got to it. it is so hard to pick one of these air cooled standby generators. i like the Gillette because their alternator is 9" compared to 7" on other brands but Winco is considered a workhorse because of ;t's Honda engine. ....
