My local NH dealer has a 1991 Ford 1920 4wd (gear) with Ford FEL and 1880 hours on it. It appears to be in decent shape with good tires and straight sheetmetal and good but faded paint. He's asking $8900 for it and might deal a little. A check of Machinery Link shows that the price is fair even without the FEL. My questions are: 1) Are there any known troublespots on this model? 2) Is there anything I need to look at in particular when checking this unit out? and 3) Is the price fair in the real world?

The hours might be getting in the range for a new clutch if it had had a lot of loader use. The pumps and injectors can be expected to go for awhile. It shouldn't make much exhaust smoke at start up and that should diminish to a puff of gray when throttle is added when it warms up. However, it might smoke some if the valve clearances and injection timing haven't been set in awhile.
There shouldn't be much blow-by from the crankcase breather. The control levers shouldn't feel 'sloppy' or be bent. I'd check the loader frame for cracks at the welds (lifting the front with the bucket can reveal unseen cracks).
You might try backing it up hill with weight in the loader to see if it pops out of reverse. It's an aggravation if it happens frequently, and eventually it won't stay in gear. It's not a big repair but can require a split.
I don't know the TX options for the 20-series but it might be good to know if it has live pto and if the three forward gears are synchromesh. On 10-series tractors, the optional TX with synchromesh and live pto has a shift lever on the steering column.
Pretty good tractors far as I know and several around here are still in commercial service. The 10-series tractors had a few weaknesses that were fixed for the 20-series, but I don't know if the front drive was beefed up. On the 10-'s you did want to avoid using 4wd for heavy loader unless there was a lot of ballast on the 3ph. ....

Sounds like a fair price to me. There was one for sale in my area with a FEL & bushog, asking price $13,750 - it is still sitting there. How comfortable are you with the dealer and his after-the-sale support? A good dealer makes all the difference over the long haul. ....
