I'm looking for something to mow 30-50 acres occasionally and pull a blade or disc harrow very occasionally. As always, $ is tight. I ran across a Ford 801 tractor (gas) with a 5 ft shredder. The tractor has been converted to 12 volt and has an alternator. It starts and runs good, paint and tires are fair. The shredder deck is rusty but the gearbox is quiet and it cuts well. Seller is asking $3000 for all. Is this a fair price? Are there any things in particular I need to look at on this model? It seems that parts are readily available for this model. Does anyone know when it was built?

Thanks for any help.

I don't know anything about these but I poked around on the web a little. These were made from 1957-1962 and found two other working 801s for sale with asking prices of $900 and $5k. tractortips dot com indicated that the 801 doesn't have a 3 point hitch. Is that right? If so that will limit the utility. Tractor parts seem to be available but not sure about parts for implements if needed. In addition to the tractortips site you might poke around a little on ytmag dot com (yesterdays tractors). ....

You are in the range of price that the tractor should be at. I Just wouldn't want the job of mowing 50 acres with one. ....

Without knowing for sure I'd guess that 801's have a 3ph but not a standard CAT I, II or III hitch. That is the situation with Ford N's. Their 3ph pin sizes aren't standard now but I think adapter sleeves are available so they can use current 3ph implements. ....

The 801 designation is really the "series" of tractor. The actual model number would be 841 or 851, something like that. It can be found on the left side of the tractor under the battery. The different model numbers had different options; I can't remember all of the details but I think the 841 had no live PTO and the 851 (or was it 861?) did. Apparently they all have live hydraulics. I think power steering was an option.
These are a powerful but light tractor. They have close to 50 hp at a weight (dry) of less than 3000 pounds. We've been using one for a few years for light-duty brush-hogging and pulling logs, etc. Ours has been painted the color of the later model Fords, maybe someday we'll paint it the correct colors.

You're probably right, Tom. On Tractortips they have Cat-1,2,3 checkboxes but all of them said NO on the 801 series. ....

Bill the power steering was on one of the number series. It's like 841 was with independent pto the 861 had power steering. But there were no combinations of both if I'm not mistaken. ....

The 801 series tractor had several models, 3 of which are missing PTO, 3point or both. Those are the 811,821 and 831. They all have a 172 cu in red tiger engine with about 48 horsepower. The 841 has a 4 speed transmission, the 851 has a 5 speed transmission and single stage clutch, the 861 has 5 speed and dual stage clutch. 871 and 881 are selectospeed transmissions with the 881 having ground drive / 2 speed PTO. $3000 is a fair price for a good 841 and shredder, a good price for an 851, and a very good price for an 861. I have no knowledge of the value of the other models. The machine will work well with a 5 or 6 foot shredder but you really need an over running coupler to keep the shredder from pushing the tractor when you push in the clutch. ....
