Hi. Newbie here. 3600 diesel bought nonrunning. Injector pump rebuilt. Got it cranked but it takes 10-15 seconds of cranking to get it going. Blue smoke out exhaust for 30 seconds or so then a steady stream of white smoke out the crankcase tube and some from exhaust. Smoke continued after engine got to operating temp. The slow cranking leads me to believe compression? Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to our little corner of the internet.

Generally low compression allows it to crank faster, less load on the starter. White smoke indicates incomplete combustion, in this case I'd say it's from slow cranking speed.

My first step would be to pull the starter off and take it to an auto electrics shop to have it checked, it's likely in need of a rebuild. While you're doing that make sure all the battery leads (at both ends) are clean and solidly connected.

I do agree however that low compression could be the cause of the continued white smoke after start up, especially out the crankcase vent.

One issue at a time, LOL.

Best of luck. ....

It appears to be a relatively new starter but I agree it is worth a look. Tinkering with it yesterday and noticed the timing mark on the injection pump was 6 degrees to the right of zero (not sure if that is advanced or retarded). I will readjust that this weekend and see if that helps. Forget to mention but it also has new injectors. Thanks. ....

Even a new starter can burned up from over-cranking on it.

Check all your cables too, a bad connection will do exactly what you are seeing. The connection between the cable and clamp can be bad also. The cables themselves could just be under-sized even.

Have you load tested the battery to prove it's not the culprit either?

Best of luck. ....

Newer battery, fully charged and kept on a maintainer. Cable connections are good and new heavy duty cables. ....

If the battery and cables are good the only real question mark left then is the starter.

I'd really advise taking it in to get checked.

Best of luck. ....

Almost no measurable compression. Pulled pistons and wear outside tolerance on 2 of 3 cylinders. Rings broken on No. 3. Finishing tearing it down for bore/resleeve (It has sleeves which means it has been machined before). ....
