The left brake grabs and skids if you touch the pedal. The right feels fine. When static the pedal goes down further that when when moving. Can the shoes be installed in such a way as to make them kick out when the drum touches them? Can a broken spring do this? Haven't tried them going in reverse.
thanks!

Don't know what an NAA is or its age, but after a few decades it's reasonable to replace the brake springs. ....

Sorry 'bout that...
I thought I was in the antique Ford forum. 1954 Ford NAA Jubilee tractor as in my profile. I'm going in to see what I can see as soon as possible. I hope it is as simple as replacing a broken spring...

Found out why that left brake is so grabby. The entire area is clotted with old oil and crud. The seal had been leaking for a long time gumming up the works. Funny that there was so little evidence of the leakage on the outside. The brake shoes, springs and all are fine but will need cleaned thoroughly. The banging of the brake has sheared off a long stud and loosened others. The axle nut is tighter than a hatband so I'll have to remount the wheel to really get on it. Naturally the axle nut retaining circlip broke off in the nut so I expect to ruin the nut during removal. Have a new one coming. Need that long stud but don't have a parts book.
Anybody know of an on-line parts book for the old Fords?
thx,

I was able to answer my own question so here ya go...
newholland.com has the parts catalog on-line in the ag section. Although it is just as inaccurate as one might expect from a 50 year old tractor it got me where I needed to be. ....
