I have a case 235, its been running well for about 2 years but now the oil sump is filling with oil which I have found to be leakage from the hydraulic pump. I have replaced the seals but the same thing is happening. Is there anything special required to replace seals on hydraulic pump?

Joey;
A few things come to mind.
Was there any wear on the shaft, or just enough bearing wear in the pump to cause a bit of movement of the shaft?
Could have a seal been installed backwards?
Is something in the hydraulic system causing the pressure to be too high forcing fluid to go to the weakest point of escape?
There can be lots of other reasons, but these come to mind right now. ....

Hi,

Thanks for your reply to my posting.

I am removing the pump again and will check for wear on the shaft, it is hard to establish wheather the bearings are worn but I shall try to see. What do you think could cause the pressure to become too high? I do not know how to check that, I think the seals are fitted correctly.

One thought I have had is; when I first fitted the pump. I run the engine for quite some time thinking that the system would self bleed and the pump got quite hot. In the end I had to open the system to allow fluid to get through and the pump seemed to run well but after an hour it failed again. I wondered if the lack of fluid and heating of the pump may have damaged the primary seal. What do you think?

Thanks for taking the time to concider this.

By the way what is your name.

God bless

Joey;
I'm afraid you may have cooked the pump by running it dry till it got hot. Pumps are built with very close tolerances and just can't run for more than a few seconds without fluid to lubricate the moving parts inside. If the pump was that hot on the outside then it likely was hot enough on the inside to destroy a seal and likely more
Make the best of what you can from it, but if the pumpo is shot there are exchange places where they rebuild and exchange your pump for a repaired one here in the states, and likely there too.

Hi Frank,

I suspect you are right, I will let you know how things turn out.

Incidentially, I looked into getting a new pump and they told me it would cost £450 thats about $800 US. I'm in the wrong business!

Thanks for the input.

God bless
