Now it's time for the experts. Sounds as if it were a lead-in to the segment on the Red-Green Show.

The problem that I experienced yesterday were numerous brief, momentary drops in RPM when using the MMM yesterday. The drops in RPM could be very brief just noticing the audible "cut" in the engine's sound, to a drop almost to the point of quitting. And it did quit on me several times. But, it would start right back up again. I finally figured that I should knock it off and see what is going on with it.

I have had zero problems up to now, and it has a 110 hours on it. The temperature was normal (where it always registers once warmed-up -- about the second tick up from the bottom). I always run a bit of Diesel Service too.

I suspect that I may have gotten some less than stellar fuel containing some water since the SCUT was recently filled-up. I do not note any water in the fuel there at the sight glass unless it is full of water.

I plan on draining some or all of the tank there at the filter (back left tire under the seat), and then dropping the sight glass to see if it is full of water; at the time, there is no obvious separation line "telling me" there is fuel and water in the bowl.

Any thoughts on the problem? I have even thought that it may be more than water in the fuel since I would have thought it to just "die" completely. Or should I just get it up to the dealer to get it sorted-out?

Start with the simple stuff. Fuel filter?

As a suggestion, you might start pouring your fuel through a water-filtering funnel when refueling to prevent this sort of situation. I'm amazed at how well those things work. ....

Your description doesn't sound like fuel starvation.

Generally speaking fuel starvation is a fade out / fade in thing, not a sudden (or brief) cut out / cut back in.

What you are getting sounds more like a problem with the shut off solenoid, either the power to it, the ground side or the valve itself momentarily opening.

I would look there first.

Best of luck. ....

Wr5evk8jj,

I can't help but wonder what the mowing conditions were like when this problem occurred. Sometimes a very heavy, wet grass, will cause the mower to plug up and the engine to stall.

If you were mowing in some very tall grass, your ground speed may been the culprit, along with the fact that your mower was set too low for the conditions, causing the discharge chute to plug up.

Of course, I could be way off-base here, especially if this problem was present even while the mower wasn't running.

Joel ....

Joel--Nope, the grass was as dry as could be. And it was doing it even without the PTO engaged. But, your response got me to thinking more about the environment and the conditions when it was happening.

Murf-- I believe that you are on to something. The shut-off solenoid was something I did not consider at all. It was not after seeing Joel's comment that it "hit me" that the engine was doing the cut-in/cut-out thing even while moving and not just mowing. In fact, I remember from yesterday that I was just getting on it and it sputtered; I guess the jostling of the tractor with me getting on it caused it to happen. And it was sputtering a little bit when going to, and definitely from, mowing -- I only got about a third finished since it was acting-up so bad; coming back into the garage was an ordeal since it sputtered to a dead stop several times. I think the culprit may be where you are leading me to. Thanks. I will be taking a close look at it after getting home this evening.

Again, what a forum! ....

Murf may be on to something but I think is way further up the line than that---like where where your butt goes.

errrrr?

Yup, seat switch(es).

Either one is going bad, the wires are ready to break. Or, the switch IS good, but(t) (pun intended) you moved to one side or the other taking weight off it. Been there got the T-shirt. ....

If it checks out OK electrically, I'd look for a vacuum condition at the filler cap not venting to atmosphere.

Also, clean out that filter AND bowl. You may find organic "snot" clogging the filter which varies from semi-clear to pea-green snot color. ....

Even though the analogy has been discussed here previously, this forum is like sitting around a pot-bellied stove (wrong time of year here in the northern hemisphere) or at the local diner or the corner store listening to what others are saying. I appreciate the collective wisdom this forum has provided me. I can only hope that I can provide to others in a similar manner.

EW -- you nailed it. Thanks for the lead. Checked things out while the kids were playing in the back before it got dark. Took a look at the wire to the fuel cut-off -- all looked fine. Popped the seat up to have a look at the seat switch -- all looked fine there too. Seat back down and then fired it up. Was able to manually replicate the problem with the seat switch. The temporary fix was adjusting the switch slightly so that it engages a bit more. I'll be ordering a new switch to provide a better long-term resolution, and a safer one. ....

So Jeff & I both had it, partially. :)

The seat switch was dropping power to the fuel shut-off solenoid.

Glad we could get to the bottom of the problem. ;)

Best of luck. ....
