 Yanmar Alternator Conversion

I have a YM1600 that has beeen through 3 Hitachi alternators in the past 2 years. Everything seems normal except for a lot of night work (headlights). I am considering trying a Delco alternator in place of the original. Has anyone tried this and if so how about the wiring? Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Call Tom Fredricks At Fredricks Equipment Inc. He has been working with Yanmar tractors for the past 6 or 7 years he could probably answer your question. I know he has some alternators that he sells. Good Luck.

I'd probably be thinking about different alternators too. However, it really shouldn't be happening unless there's a bunch of auxiliary lighting on the tractor.

You might want to check the condition of the battery and perform alternator voltage and current output tests to see the regulator is allowing excessive charge rates. A bad regulator may be allowing a high charge rate. A battery with a high internal discharge rate needs more charging and places a higher load on the alternator.

You might also estimate whether the operation is likely to keep the battery fully charged. A lighting load increases the charge time for the battery and frequent short night time operation may never fully re-charge the battery. Use of a trickle charger between uses may take some load off the alternator.

I know it has been done before. I read about it on another tractor board. An inexpensive GM alternator and voltage regulator should do the job. You will probably need to fab up some brackets to mount the alternator. I once had a copy of some documentation on how to do this, but have lost track of it.

try to find a delco alternator that has an internal regulator and is self exciting. This altrnator only reguires that one wire to be run to the battery,as soon as the alternator is turned by the engine it will start charging the battery. This alternator should be available in 60,80,& 105 amp units. Try a starter alternator shop it should run about $40 for a rebuilt unit. You should only have to fabricate a bracket. If you look at auto performance catalogues you can find universal type mounting accessories for this alternator. Good Luck
