 WON'T START - YANMAR 3110D

Being retired on low income, I tried to replace my old Ford 4000 diesel at as low a cost as possible. I read up on Yanmar and decided to look for a large one. I found a YM3110D in Edmonton, Alberta CA for what I thought to be a good price and just took delivery this morning.

Unfortunately, the closest loading ramp was 3 miles away. The tractor started promptly and ran very smoothly. But after unloading the tractor and starting toward home, the tractor gushed a lot of smoke and quit running after going only a few hundred feet. I couldn't get it started with many tries and the truck driver was gone by then, so I had to have someone tow it to my home. It still will not start, although it does make an effort to do so at times. I'm wondering if it just flooded out after getting warmed up. My Ford had glow plugs, so I've never used ether, and hesitate to use it now.

What do you suggest I do about this tractor? I very much need an owner's manual and service manual. The freight truck driver didn't know anything about the tractor or what the various knobs were for. StanMcCluskey@cs.com

What level of diesel is in the tank? Is it possible that you got a gulp of air as you unloaded?

You might have to bleed the fuel system if air got in as peters has suggested. If you have a manual, it should show how to do this. If not, call a mechanic.

The Deere equivalent have a larger filter and a smaller filter in the gas tank. We had some posts, including myself that had the screen plug in the tank and stall the engine.
It is possible that the sloshing of the tank during shipping could have stirred up the sediment and plugged the line.

Had a similar problem with my tractor after I purchased it. It would run but under heavy load it would run out of fuel. Found several small pieces of a leaf ( "jap maple I think" Laughing out loud) in the fuel tank. Gravity would suck them into the fuel line inlet shutting off the fuel. Check your fuel line and follow it down to the filter. See if the clear filter has fuel all the way to the top. If not check in the tank, you may have to drain it and remove whatever has plugged the line. Also there is a fuel shut off at the filter, check to make sure fuel is turned on...
