I have a 1983 Yanmar YM226 that my father in law gave me. It has been sparingly used over the last ten years. Usually if it has a problem starting I bleed the fuel lines and it fires right up. Now that is not working. This past weekend I bled the lines and the tractor started and reved up to 2000rpms, and I could not get it to shut off. It ran for about 30 seconds at high rpm and then died. Now it will not start. I am getting fuel to the back cylinder but not the first two.
I know very little about diesel motors, so I need some input. Thanks in advance.

This is a desirable and appreciating model that likely needs minor work on the fuel and throttle systems. The top Yanmar shop in the country (IMHO) is within trailering distance, so I'd take it to Hoye in Iowa Park, buy a factory Service Manual (or at leat an Operators Manual if they have any) from them, and have them demo how to service it. If it was sitting for years without the clutch pedal clipped down, it's likely frozen, which can be tricky. ....

Yeah - not to put your technique in a bad light - but I'm pretty sure that's most of the problem. The running on issue is almost certainly due to a stuck pump piston or two.
If I recall correctly, the YM226 has a manifold heater. I'm guessing either you didn't realize this, or it didn't work. So by virtue of all the cranking without benefit of the cold start assist, you've now likely fouled one or more of the fuel paths.
There are a number of ways this issue can be approached, but I personally would try the $10 chemical route. Have you heard of a product called Diesel Purge? When fed to the injection pump (instead of diesel fuel), it frees up the pump AND cleans the injectors. It's about $10 per treatment, and should be available through your local parts stores.

Yes, a "thermostart" glow plug and fuel cup in the intake manifold, plus a compression-release control, so he should have a manual just to start it right. ....

Yeah, but does your ThermoStart actually work?? You might be pushing the ThermoStart button for nothing. Is the fuel reservoir full, is there voltage to the glow plug? Does the glow plug heat?
