 Lincoln 335 Tig Welder

I have a question with My Lincoln tig 335 welder, when I step up to using a 5/32 tungstein pure or thoriated rod,and start welding 3/8 aluminum, the weld becomes real contaminated looking and will not even take the filler rod, and now if I down size to a 1/8 tungstein rod pure or even red with same settings I have know problem welding, except the tungstein starts to go away for the heat, I am using 280 amps and that is max for that tungstein, I have changed cups to bigger to get more cleaning action, I run the argon at 12 to 20 on the flow meter, trying different combinations, but it almost seems that I am pushing the weld, when I start to use the 5/32 tungstein, I know I have still not given enough information, but if you can get me started down the right path, I will feed you more. thanks for anything....Jim.........

I have a Lincoln (not a TIG) so can tell you that on their website you can sign up for a free newsletter on the type that you do.

First of all, you must weld Al with AC. You use DC for most others.

If you have a squarewave welder, adjust the positive/negative balance to about 80% electrode negative. This will keep the heat out of the 1/8 tungsten while still cleaning the Aluminum. Weld forehand style to clean the weld in front of your torch with the Argon.

Use only pure tungsten and Argon for Al.

I weld 3/8 aluminum with much less current, but I do turn up the arc frequency to about 150 Hz. I don't even own any collets for tungsten larger than 1/8".

I hope this helps.
