After reading several posts about trenching I came across the following web site: http://www.farmshow.com/issues/250608.asp
This shows a trencher attachment to a loader bucket that would allow shallow trenching in most applications. One could build something similar without to much expense, its a very simple idea. Just thought I would mention it.

Did you see what that guy wants for that attachment? $750! He's pretty proud of his idea. I could buy a brush hog and a post hole digger with not much more than $750. ....

It would be pretty easy to make up a little box like that in a couple hours.
I put wire and cable in the ground for my amateur radio towers and such. I use a sub-soiler that is modified slightly to feed wire. For heavy cable, I clamp the cable to the back and "snake" it into the trench by pulling the uncoiled cable through the trench. For small wires, I use a piece of plumbers snake (coiled steel wire tubing) to follow behind the sub-soiler and feed the wire off of a spool. I have pulled in heavy cables of over 100 ft and can lay small wire for an indefinite distance.
It would be pretty easy to make a little box that was described in the link and attach that to the subsoiler. With the loader model, you capture the dirt, but you cannot see what you are doing either. ....

An attachment like the one on Farm Show would work for a very shallow trench without rocks. If you notice the small wings in the picture, they appear to be skids to limit the depth. The farther out front you have something extended the more the front of the tractor will tend to dip down and raise the front-end of the tractor, that's why I don't think that it would work for anything very deep or rocky. ....

Where do you buy your attachments ? Around here a good heavy duty 6 ft. hog worth having will run close to 700.00 alone.

Well, my tractor's just a little one...
I have a quote for a 4ft. Howse brush hog for $550. I can get the post hole digger for about $350, so it's not too much more than $700 :-)
