 JD790 vs JD4200 or 4300, turf tires or R4

I am wanting a new tractor and like the 790 but I can't get it with r4 industrial tires and I will be doing some land clearing and cutting underbrush in woods and will also use tractor on lawn some. I think turf tire would pucture more easily that r4's and think a 4200 or 4300 would be a better choice for that reason. I don't know alot about tractors so I need advice. I am a deer hunter and want to work on food plots, thin underbrush in woods and also work on my yard. I will get a loader with the tractor. Thanks for any advice.

 JD790 vs JD4200 or 4300, turf tires or R4

Following is a copy of post I submitted here a while back. There are several more on all three tractors. I am going with industrial R4 tires as they look like a good compromise between turf and ag. They'll still give me some traction but be easier on the lawn (maybe).I currently have a price on a JD 790 with loader, industrial tires, mid pto, 4wd, manual transmission for $13,720.This is versus $14,600 for the same set-up in a 4200. I also have a quote of $14,000 for a demo (used at rodeo) 4200 for $14,000, same set-up, which I am about to jump on.Be aware of some differences between the two. Loader max lift = 755 for 790 and 1195 for 4200; 4200 has independent pto, 3 point lift of 790@24 inches is 815 and 1700 for 4200, pto hp = 25 for 790 and 21.5 for 4200. All these numbers are for geared transmission. The 790 has more horsepower but it looks like the 4200 will do more. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information Bill. I have talked to several dealers and all have said the industrial tires are not an option on the 790. I even had one dealer said he tried to find industrial tires for the 790 but he did not have any luck. I think I could have been content with a 790 with industrial tires but I agree with you that it looks like the 4200 is more tractor even if has fewer horsepower. I may go the extra step and go with a 4300 unless I can find a deal like you are getting. Thanks again.

I recently purchased a Deere 855 with turf tires. I did not expect it to have traction to do much outside of the yard, but what they will pull is very surprising. I, too, work on deer food plots, and I farm for a living. I would have never thought this tractor would handle a 6 ft. heavily built harrow, but it will pull it deep enough to turn under well. It did require 250 lbs. of front wieghts and filling the front tires with water to balance. Getting back to the point, I did not really want turf tires when I bought the tractor, but I would heartily recommend them now. If nothing else, the rear tire size on mine is 33-12.50-15, so I could go buy some Super Swampers if I get tired to the turfs.
