 John Deere 790 Tractor Use

I just discovered this site today so forgive me if I am not posting on the correct board or following proper etiquette. I am thinking of purchasing a new 790 tractor and using it in a small business. I plan on doing brush hogging and overseeding on up to 5 acre parcels of land. I would appreciate any ideas on equipment to purchase or avoid. Do I need a bigger tractor? Any ideas and opinions are welcomed and appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have a JD4400 and run a part time small business with it. Here are some things I have learned. A front loader is a must have, you will find many uses and make good money with it. I have a Gill (Woods) PL60 Lawn Core Aerator and it cost me $1900.00 and I made over $3000.00 with it last fall, so it paid for itself in one fall. I have a Gill (Woods) SR65 box blade and paid $1250.00 for it and have made back that money in about 3 months. I also have a JD 660 Rototiller $3000.00 and have made about a $1000.00 with that in the last 10 months. I have a cheap back blade but will upgrade to a better one when funds permit. A backhoe would be nice but so far few requests for that and for my insurance I pay about $600.00 a year and if I had a backhoe my insurance would triple, because any time you dig into the ground there is a much higher risk of costly damage to things such as Power lines, sewer & water lines and gas lines, also its a big investment at about $7500.00. As for a rotery cutter (BrushHog) around here in Virginia everybody and his brother has one and will do it dirt cheap so it would not be profitable. I will not work for less that $20.00 and try to get $30.00 or better per hour.

Here are some recommendations for the order I would buy equipment:

1. Front Loader
2. Box Blade
3. Back Blade
4. Lawn Core Aerator
5. Rototiller
6. Soil pulverizor (If there is a lot of new construction in your area buy this before tiller)
7. Post Hole digger

Buy the best and heaviest equipment you can afford. Target the upscale housing developments (New and Established) in your area, get in good with the areas building contractors and lawn care companies they will provide a lot of work. Email me if you have any further questions. Tom McDonald
