Northern Tool at www.northern-online.com has hydraulics components. I dealt with them several times a couple of years ago. Most regions should have a machine shop that specializes in rebuilding hydraulic parts. Such a shop should be a good source for rebuilt or used parts, but you have to ask around to find one.

If you buy parts on-line, it's good to be aware that spooling valve assemblies have gallons per minute ratings, and the physical size of the valve goes with the gmp rating. Compact tractor pumps are on the small side, and the size of something like a 20 gpm SCV is far too big for a compact. You can't tell physical dimensions from a catalogue picture.

There's a still current thread where people are talking about building a backhoe from plans. I wonder if plans for a loader also might be available. Myself, I'm sure that I don't have the engineering background do the design work myself, but I might be able to weld one together from plans. Sounds like an interesting project, and good luck with it.

There maybe other sites where the hydralic cylinders are available other than Northern. There are used tractor sites where used parts are available. I am not enclined to use used hydralics. Having rebuilt a few it is not my favorite pass time.
Someone provided the site below which has fittings. I have never ordered from there but from what I can tell the prices are competative with the local rates here.

I just finished building a FEL for my JD 650. I ordered all my hydraulics from Baileynet: http://www.baileynet.com and was very happy w/ their service and help.
Probably the biggest thing to consider on the cylinder size is how long your loader arms will be in relation to the mounting points of the cylinder. If the cylinder's too long, you'll either raise the bucket over the seat of the tractor and operator, or just bend the frame of the loader. Too short and it won't raise high enough. Since I didn't have access to a CAD program, I made models of the loader arms out of 2x4s to see exactly how long they needed to be with the cylinder both extended and retracted all the way. Also consider front tire clearance as the axle pivots on uneven ground.
You may want to check out the Yahoo Homebuilt Equipment club: http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/homebuiltequipmentfortractors Check the photos section, a guy named Matt Brule built a CadLoader for a Yanmar 1500.

Good Luck,
Bryan
