 Plans for a Ballast Box

Does anyone have or know of plans for a ballast box? I have a JD 4100 with a FEL. JD operators manual suggests that you should use one and the dealer says you really don't??? Go figure!!!!Anyway, I hate spending a $150 on a JD implement when I know I could probably build one for less than $50.Or if someone has a JD ballast box, just provide me the dimensions and I'll field engineer it.

Hello Terry,
I used to own a JD4100 with FEL and I can tell you from first hand experience that you need some type of ballast. I purchased the JD ballast box for $90 at the local dealer and it was very well constructed. Probably the most reasonably priced attachment in the JD lineup. About the first time a rear tire comes off the ground or you loose steering you will probably agree. If you have 3 pt. implements you can use them for ballast as well. Good luck with your ballast project.

Thank you for responding.

I figured that it would be necessary to have one. Just trying to verify the fact. Just spoke to a friend and we're on our way to a scrap yard to buy project materials. He helps build the box, I landscape around his new garage.

we built one out of a 55 gallon drum.cut the top 1/3 off,put a draw bar thru it,and poured it full of concrete.this is on a full size tractor.it wouldn't have to be that big for a compact.good luck.

For planning purposes, concrete weighs 150 lbs per cubic foot. There are 7.5 gallons in a cubic foot. So another way to say it would be that it weighs 20 lbs per gallon.
