 Loader Safety

I must admit, there are times when that bucket sure is handy for climbing on as a scaffold. While I,m up there I keep remembering how unbelievably fast the backhoe fell when I busted that pinched hose under load! So I keep thinking that I lock the DSCV out, keep people off the tractor and climb in and out of it using a ladder. Just how dangerous is this anyway?Incedently, the most fascinating and useful information for me from these boards are the safety stories so don't hold back any opinions. In fact, I feel threads on close calls are so informative they merit their own category here. Thanks, Greg

Greg, I think you've answered your own question. If anything goes wrong, it can be very dangerous (so can climbing on a ladder), so I certainly won't recommend that you, or anyone else, use a front end loader that way. But of course, I've done it in the past myself and probably will in the future. And my brother has had me pick him up in the bucket to prune limbs off trees and to work on rain gutters on his house. In other words, if you do it, just be aware of the dangerous possibilities, assess the risk, and act accordingly.

As I was taught when I was young (all in my family are pilots), it's NOT the fall that hurts, it's the sudden stop at the bottom that gets you!!!!! This is especially true with land-based equipment, falling from 8'ish feet up in a loader bucket doesn't sound too bad, having the loader land on top of you sounds real bad... Try to operate equipment with 'Murphy's Law' in mind (anything that can go wrong, will, usually at the worst possible moment. Best of luck, and BE CAREFUL!!
