I have roughly 1000 feet of fencing to put in. Locally, a PHD and 9" auger seems to be running about $1000+/-. From Northern Tool I see one for about $600 (shipping included). Any thoughts on a PHD from this outfit (I think it was Mark who said it looks to be pretty good -- anyone else?).

The other alternative is to rent a skid steer with auger for roughly $600 for a weekend. I know this will dig much faster, put then I don't own the tool...

Any thoughts would be most apreciated -- I forgot to say I will be digging a few holes by hand to see how hard or easy the digging is. If it is really rocky, it might be that the skid steer will be the only option.

Thanks all!

I am in the middle of putting up 1100' of ranch fence. I bought a PHD at TSC for $500 including the 9" auger. It works great in my soil, which is mostly sand with some clay. Depending on your terrain, I added a hydraulic side link last week, and that doubled our production. Plumbing the auger with the side link was taking too much time, the hyr. side link put those issues to bed.

Have fun.

Please excuse my ignorance -- TSC, what is it? A number of people have referred to it as a place to purchase implements.

Thanks!
