 Drag harrow & K-31 Fescue

I am preparing to overseed fescue sown earlier this year. The ground I have cleared is thinly established grass with bare patches, and rough, uneven terrain. Along with liming, my plans were to core aerate and drag harrow the surface to prep for the new seed. I've read several postings on different harrows on this board. Does anyone have experience with a heavy (chain type) drag harrow? If so, I would appreciate your comments on the possible damage to the established grass. I am trying to preserve as much of my initial investment in seed as possible. Two of the six acres I will be working are on a hillside which is succeptable to wash during heavy rain. Any input, ideas, commments, experiences, etc. would be greatly appreciated.Lou P. in NC

I used a large drag harrow (probably 20' wide and 8' long) to prep a 10 acre area before seeding and then just after to cover the seed. It worked well but it would have torn up any established grass. Perhaps a lighter one would not tear the grass out.I would recommend a grass seeding machine or have a farmer seed it for you. I think anything that scrapes the ground has to do damage to new grass.
