 box blade usage.

How about some advice on using a box blade.Particularly using one to smooth out dirt areas that have been worked recently or where a sewer line has been installed. There must be some technique that I am not using because I just seem to move the soil from one spot to another.Maybe the angle of the box needs to be adjusted via the top link possibly. Please reply if you're an experienced "dirt worker". Thanks,Busboy

Use your lift to drop dirt in the hole. Raise your lift just as you approach the hole. Keep taking small bites. Run across the trench line and not with it. In the final step, run with the trench line, letting the tractor straddle the trench. Then run your tractor tire down the trench to pack. Repeat as necessary.

Park the tractor and box blade on level ground, prefer cement drive, with box down adjust the top link out so that front blade is 1-2 inches off the ground or more for heavier soils. The rear blade should be on the ground to level the soil that goes under the front blade.

Some people get pretty good at what MarkL described. I never had much luck getting my 3ph to move the right amount or at the right time to make me very happy with what I was doing. A hydraulic top-link changed all that.

Even on the fly, I shorten the link to cut and pick up a box of dirt. When it's full, I lengthen the link till it doesn't cut and I can drag the load to where I want it. Lengthen it some more and then it spreads, and all without touching the 3ph. The rear cutter is pretty handy for back-filling trenches. When trenching on lawns I've taken to dumping the hoe onto vapour barrier. Usually I can just push the dirt and plastic into the trench and then pull out the barrier. That way I don't rip or burn strips in the lawn, and I don't have to hand rake dirt off it.
