Price on King Kutter box blade

I'm looking to buy a box blade. I'll be using it behind a John Deere 4200 MFWD with 26 HP mostly for maintaining a gravel drive & parking area and do some landscaping. I'm looking at a new 5' King Kutter box blade at a local dealer and was quoted $270. Is that a reasonable price to pay for one? Is there anything else I should consider?

Northern Tool lists their Howse 5' box blade for $300, and I believe you have to pay shipping. It seems that the Howse and KK are of similar quality, I usually prefer the KK products because I've had good luck with them in the past.

Price on King Kutter box blade

I recently bought a KK 6' boxblade for around $360 from Tractor Supply Co. I'm a contractor and put it through its paces--and it holds up well--no complaints. In fact I graded a private road nearly 3/4 mile long with it attached to my skidsteer loader--then spread 500 tons of crushed stone with it (I made a special 3-point implement attachment for it).

I originally had it on a 9N and it did ok for smoothing/grading topsoil: tip the leading-edge up so the backward facing blade (there are two blades) back-drags rather than cuts.

Sold the 9N and bought a '02 New Holland TC33D 4x4. It can pull even through the hard-as-concrete yellow and blue clay we have here in Michigan with all ripper teeth down. Keep in mind the wider the better when it comes to getting a good finish grade providing you have the HP to pull it.

I have been less than thrilled with the Howse implements I have gotten from Northern tool. My advise is look elsewhere, or anywhere.

I ended up buying a First Choice box blade for $285 and am very please with it. It's about 100 pounds heavier than the KK and is vastly superior in terms of fit and finish. The welds were straight, true and even throughout. The finish was a powder coat paint. I was even able to get it in John Deere green at no extra charge.

I had it on my trailer and couldn't resist stopping in at the local TSC so I could see it and the KK side by side. There was absolutely no comparison.

The reason I was given the $270 price instead of the regular $300 was that the finish on the KK was all scraped up.

I'd recommend First Choice to anyone. It's like buying Land Pride or better quality at a KK price or better.
