Looks like these are tillers that came overseas with the grey market tractors. Most of the dealers selling grey market tractors have a bunch of them laying around. (like in the picture) I have seen them as low as a couple hundred bucks but didn't investigate so I don't know the size, condition, etc. Parts would have to be a big question mark. You may want to buy two tillers so you have your own parts inventory.

I looked at the web link and those are indeed grey market tillers and the one in front is a Yanmar. Those tillers don't seem as sturdy as the new tillers you can buy but they do work well. I have a Yanmar tiller and I have used my dad's domestic tiller so I am speaking from experience. A couple of tips regarding these tillers. Make sure you get one that is gear driven and not chain driven. The grey market tillers that I have had with chain drives did not seem a sturdy as the gear drive models. Another thing, most of the smaller ones like the one pictured do not use a regular top link, they used a special bracket with a top link that is about 12-14 inches long. If you try to hook it up to the 3pt of your tractor without this rig the tiller will hit the back wheels. You can overcome this problem by removing the lift pins on the tiller and welding 6-8 inch extensions on the tiller and then replacing pins. This will also require extending the PTO the appropriate length. Other than that these tillers work great.

Brent

Looks like what a friend found last year at a farm equipment auction lot. All the stickers and labels are in Japanese. His looks like junk, but he said it works well and he gave $250 for it.

Thanks for all the info. This dude has a minimum bid of $400 plus I'm sure shipping is going to be $100-$200. This together with the difficulty in finding parts makes me balk at it. How can I find out if there's any grey market dealers in my area? Anyone know of one in the Raleigh, NC area?

I know of OK Tractor in Newton NC, but I don't know about Raliegh. If you find a dealer, especially if they import the tractor themselves, they will have parts. Of all of the tractor and tillers that I have sold, I have yet to have anyone break anything other than a U joint on a PTO shaft. When the tillers come in if they are in too bad of shape they are usually scraped for parts, especially the tines.
