 Renting Implements

How common (and easy) is it to rent implements? How do I find out who rents them in my area? Any advice on when one should buy vs. rent (ie. how often should I use an implement before it makes sense to buy)? Thanks. - Bob A.

In most cases you will find the ONLY people who will rent implements are the dealer, if it is a new item (demo) it will probably be expensive, unless the dealer thinks you will buy it then it may be free to try it out. Most dealers are willing (if they know you) to either rent for a nominal amount or loan you any USED implement which they may have in inventory (not consignments) from trade-in, etc. Usually you will find that a given piece that you need now, you will need again also, it is amazing how often you find a need for a particular piece AFTER you own it. As for cost, most small implements are readily available, in good shape and at a very reasonable cost. Shop around. Best of luck.

Rentals Unlimited, a chain here in the Washington DC area, does rent 3 PTH attachments, thought the weekly rates often seem to be about what you could buy a similar item for used.

Joe,

Have you had any luck renting a post hole digger from Rental Unlimited? If so, how large of an auger can be gotten. I'm looking to dig some holes for a deck, which according to Loudoun County, require an 18 in diameter. I would like to get as close to that as possible, then dig the remainder by hand since enlarging a hole is usually easier than starting from scratch.

My other option is to rent a skid steer w/ the auger attachment for about $250/day.
