 trailer for a 4110 jd

I have a 4110 20 horse desiel, and I am wanting to haul a trailer behind it to pick up firewood. I have a 5 mile strip of ground along a river bottom that I can cut all the wood I want that is storm damaged or just feel down, no live cutting. the area is too tight for a truck. How large of a wagon or trailer can I pull off the back of the tractor safly. I have a 2in ball hitch. I want to cut down on the nubmer of trips. I am thinking I need to be carful about the weight of the trailer plus the wood I place in it. I can pick up large logs that have been cut to size with my FEL.

thanks for any advise.
Roger

Picture #11 is what I use to do exactly what you are asking about. A friend and I made it out of an old shortened mobile home axle & tires, channel iron, and pressure treated decking boards. I figure the cost of materials was around $200 to $250. The trailer box is 5' x 8'. That might be a bit much fully loaded for your 4110 but should work well if not loaded to the max.

I couldn't tell from your profile, but you do know how to tow safely from a 3-point hitch right? Since the 3ph doesn't have down pressure the trailer tongue can rise up on you and cause damage the tractor or injure the operator. Plus, if you pull with the hitch too high the tractor can flip over backwards. Some mechanism should be implemented to prevent the hitch from raising too high. The Bad River hitch I use has a safety chain that limits upward travel. Be safe out there.

If you have some sort serious rear ballast weight and an FEL in place and you are operating on relatively level ground... you should be able to safely tow about 3000 pounds.

If you throw in steep or hilly terrain, a 2000 pound total load will push your tractor around, especially making downhill turns. I have jack-knifed my tractor with a full 225 gallon water tank/trailer in just that scenario.

In any case, keep it in 4wd all the time so you get some braking action from the front wheels and use a two-axle trailer if you can.

thanks for the for folks, I have a draw bar and a 3point hitch. I know now the size and weight but which is better to hook to the 3 point hitch or the draw bar as far as safty and ability to pull the most. I do have a fel for balance etc.
thanks

roger

Towing from the draw-bar is always the safest, but that limits the ballasting options. You could use the draw-bar and a single axle trailer and load the thing heavy in the front so it has the maximum tongue weight. That would favor better traction and control.

I would ballast the rear end of the tractor as much as possible to get the tractor as close to the weight of the loaded trailer as possible.

I have seen some ballast boxes with trailer hitches. I have my Bad River hitch stacked with barbell weights. The are some photos in my pics.
