Does anyone have any experience using a fence post driver on a compact? I've got a JD 850 (22 PTO HP, approx 2500 lbs w/o ballast) and a large amount of fencing to install. I've looked at Shaver and Worksaver drivers. The JD dealer recommended a small 3 PTH mounted Worksaver unit, though when I got home and read the brochure, they recommended a 35 HP tractor minimum (although the high-capacity hydraulic pump for the 850 _will_ satisfy the volume requirement of the driver). It would seem to me that a front-mounted driver would be better, as I would expect the slop in the 3PTH to waste a lot of the force in the driver (not to mention beating the heck out of the hitch).

Joe, check out the URL link below for Danuser. I have not used one of their units, simply because I cannot afford it at this time, but they did send me their literature and I think I'd like everything but the price. Although their horsepower requirements indicate a little more, they tell me my B2710 (27 hp) would handle it just fine, and I suspect they are right.

I have used one many times, a smaller machine (with high cap. hyd.) will run it, until you find a rock, then the whole show comes to a halt. Plus you then have to try to pull the half-buried post out (or cut it off) and start again. For the average person (IMHO) an auger is a far better (and cheaper) way to go, at least if you find a rock you have a chance to get it out with a bar or clam-type shovel. Unless you like irregular spaced fence posts.....Best of luck.

We have a JD model 51 post driver that I picked up used. After some expermintation it works very well on our NH TC33D compact tractor. We are installing metal T posts and also wooden 5 inch peeler core style posts.
