 Top and Tilt questions

Paid money for my tractor today, JD790/419FEL/65"BB/Forks. Looked over the hydraulic plumbing with a JD mechanic, but I'm still not sure what I need. He showed me where the hardline is that I can interrupt and put a new valve with "power beyond" (is that what its called?). His suggestion was to add a "Rear Auxiliary Hydraulic" kit, and I guess the "Hydraulic Coupler" kit. This is basically the hookup you would use if a 3pt implement needed hydraulics. But I don't want to power my Top and Tilt from that because then it would be taken if I wanted to hookup an implement that wanted hydraulics. Basically I view the Top and Tilt as a permanent part of the tractor and not something that should hookup to the "accessory ports".

So what I would like to do is plumb the top and tilt cylinders and control valve permanently, and still have rear auxiliary couplers.

It seems to me there are two approaches, one would put another four-way joystick valve inline with the front-end loader joystick. I guess this needs an "open center" valve so that the FEL joystick has a return path when the TNT joystick is centered. Northern tool has this four way valve pretty cheap, but it doesn't say if it is open center, which I think it needs to be. http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&productId=37216&R=37216

The other approach I was thinking would be to put a two port two way selector valve after the FEL joystick. You could hook it up so that when the selector handle was forward, the joystick would control the FEL, and when you pull the diverter back, it controlled the TNT. You don't need to control both at once, and then you'd only need one joystick valve. Prince has a Model DS selector valve that is the right sort of valve, but it's capable of a lot more flow than is needed. I would think a selector valve should be cheaper than a joystick.

I guess what I need is a clearer idea of how the existing hydr. plumbing is designed so I can understand how to hook into it.

Comments?

tomrscott; I'm not real sure about a 790, but on 4000 series a power beyond gives you either continuous pump flow without a relief valve or controls. You must provide that in a backhoe or other impliment you've hooked up to it. Or you have the use of the three pt., not both at the same time. I've did on farm tractors as you suggest by puting diverter valves in the loader circut you have then using the original joystick for your control of your extra circuts. It's worked for me to gain extra circuts on an older tractor that came with only one two way outlet. I guess my one concern is where you'r going to mount all the hardware. Hoses valves, fittings, etc. can get kind of big and clumbsy. Having access to a pipe bending machine could make things look lots neater. Good luck. Frank.

 Top and Tilt questions

I've heard from at least one other guy in a direct email that the selector valve is more expensive than a second joystick and takes more hoses. I guess the more hoses makes sense.

So I guess it is going to be a second 4 way joystick controller, and figuring out the plumbing to add that and the rear auxiliary hydraulic kit. I guess I should be able to run from the power beyond port on the loader controller to the inlet of the new TNT controller, and then from it's power beyond port to the rear auxiliary connections. Then both the new TNT controller's return line and the new rear auxiliary return line have to Tee into the return line from the loader controller. Does that sound about right?

Now I just have to figure out where all of those are and what hoses will be required to set it up.
