Ford 1910 Front End Axel Problem?

Just got the backhoe about two months ago. Well I was pulling out a stump in 4wheel drive in reverse. I heard some clunking noises. Now it locks up in 4wd, (mostly the front left wheel). The dealer who sold it to me said take it out of 4wd and see if it corrects the problem. It did, the wheel was freed in 2wd. But now the problem has gotten worse and even in 2wd the front wheel is locking up.

The dealer said I should never pull anything in reverse which is obvious now.

Any idea what I should look for as the problem?

Thanks

I made the same mistake with my first light 4x4 pickup, the problem there was the axle u-joint, where the steering knuckle is.

I would think this would me the same weak spot on a tractor. Maybe look at the front driveshaft first (easiest) for breakage. Then look at the delacate gearing in the steering knuckle area.

Not good, did something close to that, cost $450. I had snapped a couple of teeth off one of the front axle gears. Jack up the front end, out of 4 wheel drive and try spin each wheel by hand. If you broke anything in the front end you'll feel it right away. Good Luck.

Pulling heavy loads in reverse (vs forward) is bad for front axle gears??!! I have done exactly that for many years in my 4WD Toyotas, as well as JD CUTS and Kubotas. This is the first I have heard of that!

The gears and components are designed to pull forward. The gears have lead angles and other subtle differances which "prefer" a rotation in a certain direction.

Oneace could probably tell us more, he's the true expert.
