A general question about hydraulic filters

The Massey Ferguson filter thread has provoked a question. The hydraulic filter is about 10 times more expensive than an oil filter. Why is that? Is it made to tighter specs? Able to handle higher pressure? Is it a totally different critter? Or just manufactured in lesser quantities?

A general question about hydraulic filters

Mark, I'm not sure about the critter part but I can answer yes to the rest. The depending on system filter for 2000psi plus on new tractors. They have to withstand temperatures the same as engines in the 200 plus range and they have to work with ten gallons a minute on a small system. Many engines are totally enclosed and do not have to exchange oil with other systems as a hydraulic system does often contaminating with water and dirt more than an engine ever would.

A general question about hydraulic filters

Good answers Art........ket me add a little more.

Due to the fact that hyd. systems have a much greater volume of fluid to handle...alot more....the filter medium must be large enough to handle greater amounts of forign matter and still maintain enough flow to allow the system to work....

also, service intervals on hyd filters are usually much longer.
