 JD790 Battery Woes

I have a 6 month old JD790 w/ 30 hours and it has the famous battery corrsion problem. Has anyone tied to get this warrantied by the dealer? If I replace it with a sealed automotive battery, will it still corrode? I really don't feel like having to clean the battery, cables and mounts every six months for the next 30 years! Thanks

I have a year old jd4300. The dealer replaced the battery and repaired the damaged shelf.

Is there something peculiar about JD's corroding problem? I use round felt washers made to prevent corrosion on all my battery posts. They're less than a $ & work.

I guess that I'm the only one that does this to stop corrison BUT...

1.Take the connectors off
2.Clean the posts and the connectors
3.Apply grease from your grease gun on the posts and the connectors
4.Reconnect
5.Cover posts and connectors with a thin layer of grease
6.Problem solved

I have done this for years and it will last for about two to three years

 JD790 Battery Woes

My wifes diesel pickup had a terrible battery corrosion problem. It looked to me that it was caused by the pinch bolt that is used to clamp the battery cable to the battery terminal. At an old automotive store I found some old fashioned battery pinch bolts that are some sort of soft metal; they don't appear to be steel at all. Next I reshaped the battery terminal clamps so that they clamp tightly, switched to the better pinch bolts, cleaned the clamps, battery tops, and wires themselves with baking soda and water, and then like Jerry suggests I covered it all with axle grease after tightening everything down. I know that this total approach will work. It has before. A sealed battery works even better. BTW, I've used the grease trick all of my life and my father before me.
As far as using sealed automotive batteries in a compact diesel, I always do this. I know of no downside as long as you have room to mount it up. In fact, I've built custom battery boxes on both of my compacts for this very purpose. My favorite battery for this is the Optima Red Top. It sure will spin that starter motor in cold weather. No association...Yadda, yadda, yadda.

I bought a JD 790 last spring and suffered the same battery terminal corrosion problem. I think it's caused by el-cheapo battery terminal connectors. I just replaced the connectors, cleaned everything up, put on a little grease and everything has been fine ever since.
