JD model M skips...any ideas why

I know its not exactly a modern compact, but it gets the work done. anyway, I know there is a lot of engine knowledge out there so here it goes. Yesterday about 1.5 hrs into mowing my model M began to skip. I cleaned sediment bowl, air filter, and carb needles, plugs, and checked points. These items made no diference. Skip got worse, but stopping and pulling the choke would keep it from shutting off. It would even out and run another minute and then do it again. the tractor runs fine at idle both slow and high speed, and rarely if ever skips unless the PTO is running and the tractor is pulling. I drove up and down a large hill to load the motor with the pto off and it ran fine. I am stumped on this one. My next recourse is to replace the head gasket, but I hoped someone might have another More logical idea. Any insight would be appreciated.

Todd, I used to have an M! Nice old tractor. Particularly nice to listen to an old low compression gasser compared with the diesels of today. I changed my M over to a quasi-3pt hitch by adding a top link. Mine came with a sort of odd-ball 2 point hitch that was JD's attempt to beat the Ferguson 3pt patent. They should have just copied it. Smile
Anyway, I'm not understanding why you would pull the head. So far it sounds like a simple case of gas starvation. Sounds like the fuel filter or the main jet circuit in the carb are clogged up with crud. Clean or replace that filter, drop the float bowl, clean out the carb, and see what happens.

Todd, A couple of reasons come to mind. First the coil may be getting weak. Had this happen on a 66 Chrysler. Misses like mad when pulling hard, ran ok at slow speeds. Secondly, if they are champion plugs in the old boy, change em. I have seen this do this in lawn mower engines as well as cars. Thirdly, check the ignition wires in the dark. Might be one leaking voltage enough to act that way too. I doubt it is a carb problem. When you richened the mix with the choak it is easier to fire a spark hot enough to ignite it. Let me know by e-mail if this helps you out. Bill

Hey everyone, just wanted to say thanks for all the input. The problem turned out to be simple (as usual) just overlooked. I dropped the carb bowl, and noticed that the fuel flow with the float and needle out was slower than normal. further inspection found the fuel filter screeen inside the fuel inlet elbow was clogged up and simply starving the machine for fuel.
thanks again for all the input
Todd

You are sure welcome. Enjoy the M; not too many of them out there. Amazing that a 50 year old tractor can still work all day just about like when it was new. On mine I cut a section out of the line from the tank to the float bowl and put in an aftermarket filter from NAPA. I do this on all old machinery and it helps a bunch. The other thing I had to do to my JD M was to take the throttle apart and clean up the friction clutch there so that the lever would stay where I put it. An easy and satisfying job. Then I put all new rubber parts and new springs into the hydraulic lift control. That made quite the difference, but took a couple of evenings to get it taken apart and cleaned and back together. That might have been the point where I ordered the parts and service manual from JD. Expensive but worth it.
